As Christmas Day inches closer, many of us are set to be driving home to spend the holidays with our families.

As it’s the only time of the year to listen to festive bangers, a drive home is the perfect opportunity to listen to classic hits or even an alternative Christmas song or two.

While we can all guess that Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas is probably the best festive driving tune, Brits have decided the top 10 tunes for driving home for the holidays.

In a survey from Motorway, it was revealed that Wham!, Michael Buble, and Mariah Carey, all scraped their way into the top 10 driving hits.

It was also revealed that one slightly controversial tune made it’s way into the top five, following a bit of a hullabaloo earlier this year…

1. Driving Home for Christmas, Chris Rea

Obviously Chris Rea’s hit Driving Home For Christmas has snagged the top slot in the survey.

With Rea’s raspy vocals and the gentle beat of the -nostalgic tune, there is nothing quite like this bop on a snowy (or most likely rainy) drive home back to the countryside (or the suburbs or city if you don’t live in a Richard Curtis film).

2. Last Christmas, Wham!

Last Christmas remains one of the British public’s most loved festive tunes so it’s probably not surprising that it’s managed to snag a top spot in this survey.

The 80s pop synth tune is like a warm hug and the perfect cheesy romantic tune to sing out of tune while you struggle to find your exit on the M25.

3. Merry Xmas Everybody, Slade

Slade’s Merry XMas everyone is a rocky festive bop that adds a perfect change of pace from the romantic jingle bell bops that are so common at Christmas.

Up with the Darkness’ Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End), this is one of the few festive rock songs to really capture our hearts.

And come on, is there really anything better than screaming ‘IT’S CHRISTMAS!’ at the top of your lungs at the end of the song? I don’t think so.

4. All I Want for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is a beloved festive tune and while none of us can really reach her high notes – if you’re driving home alone, no one is going to hear how badly yo butcher this iconic song.

The song is fast-paced and dramatic, perfect for keeping you entertained as you battle the traffic on the M3.

5. Do They Know It’s Christmas?, Band Aid

Band Aid’s original Do They Know It’s Christmas? made its way to the public’s top five favourites.

The song is a slightly controversial choice after Ed Sheeran commented that he’d have chosen to not be included on the 40th-anniversary version of the song as his ‘understanding of the narrative’ had changed since 2014 when he appeared on the 30th-anniversary song.

It was argued by some singers that the song had caused more harm to Africa than good, but Sir Bob Geldof – who created the group alongside Midge Ure – has remained staunch in his support of the charity song.

6. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Michael Bublé

Of course, the King of Christmas Michael Bublé has made an appearance in the top ten.

After the release of his festive album in 2011, his covers of some of the best Yule tide hits have become Christmas classics – and none more so than It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.

7. White Christmas, Bing Crosby

Bing Crosby’s White Christmas may have been released on Decemeber 25, 1941, but the song is still an absolute bop 50 years later.

The song conjures up images of days of yore of a snow-covered home filled with candles, Christmas lights, and mince pies. It’s a classic for a reason and the perfect slow hit for a car journey.

8. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee was just 13 when she originally sang Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree which has become a beloved festive hit.

The song may have been released in 1958, but it has become a major festive hit that’s stood the test of time.

Due to this hit the 80-year-old is the only female country artist to have a song with over a billion streams on Spotify.

9. Jingle Bell Rock, Bobby Helms

Jingle Bell Rock is a song that ‘everyone in the English-speaking world knows,’ as commented in the 2004 movie Mean Girls.

The song from Bobby Helms is a festive classic and a high-energy bop that that’s a must for any festive party or journey.

10. Silent Night, Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra has so many hits but his version of Silent Night truly hits like nothing else.

It’s another nostalgic bop with Sinatra’s dulcet vocals that’s perfect for driving anytime after 4pm when the sun has set.

This gentle hit is another perfect classic, and it’s completely unsurprising that Brits have placed it in the top ten songs to drive home for the holidays.
