Kraven The Hunter is ‘not a bad film’ insists Sony CEO, Tony Vinciquerra, after critics slammed the origin story blockbuster.

Despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s best shirtless efforts, his film has had ‘the worst launch’ in recent Sony history with an abysmal 17% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie hit cinemas on December 13, opening to the tune of $43million (£34.1million) worldwide — on a $110million (£86.5million) budget.

The studio has struggled to find success with its Spider-Man spin-off films, which is linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

Madame Web and Morbius have been notoriously bad but Sony boss Tony, who is leaving the studio, admitted that Kraven has reached a new low.

The Sony Pictures boss told LA Times: ‘Unfortunately, [Kraven] that we launched last weekend, and my last film launch, is probably the worst launch we had in the 7 1/2 years so that didn’t work out very well, which I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film.’

Kraven follows Aaron as the titular hero, real name Sergei Kravinoff, whose fractured relationship with his relationship with his gangster father (Russell Crowe) motivated him to become the greatest and most feared hunter.

The film, based on Marvel comics, also stars Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott, Fred Hechinger, and Alessandro Nivola.

With 136 critic reviews, Kraven is sitting at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer but surprisingly has a much higher audience score; 74%.

Tony touched on the critical evisceration of Madame Web as part of the reason it underperformed and the Sony Marvel films have failed.

‘It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix,’ he said. ‘The critics just destroyed them. They also did it with Venom, but the audience loved [it] and made Venom a massive hit, these are not terrible films.’

Venom is generally regarded as one of the better films in the franchise but the recent third instalment proved less popular with viewers.

The audience relationship with Madame Web and Morbius is a little less clear-cut as both movies became the subjects of huge internet memes.

Whether fans enjoy the films unironically or not has become blurred, with opinions often falling into extremes of love or hate.

Kraven the Hunter serves as an origin story, set before his first meeting with nemesis Spider-Man and as he acquires his powers.

Aaron may return in future Spider-Man films, although none of the Sony characters other than Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock have appeared in the beloved trilogy.

Amid the bad reviews, the 34-year-old star was praised for his performance so fans might be open to seeing him go toe to toe with Peter Parker.
