Toto Wolff Takes a Massive U-Turn on His Recent Claims Against Valtteri Bottas

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had recently blamed Valtteri Bottas for the Monaco pit-stop mishap. He said that the pit stop mishap occurred because of Valtteri’s inability to stop at the right spot. But he has now backtracked on his comments about the Finn.

Wolff had initially blamed Bottas for not stopping at the right mark at the time of his pit stop in Monaco. The Finn defended himself by saying he had stopped well within the tolerance level required for a good pit stop.

Toto had some time to think about the incident. And has now stated he was wrong to put the blame on Bottas. He also blamed the media for making a mess of his words.

“Valtteri didn’t make any mistake”- Toto Wolff

According to Planetf1, when speaking to media at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Wolff explained the incident and the problem during the pit stop in full.

After Monaco, the Mercedes team boss had blatantly the blame on Bottas for the mistake. “Valtteri stopped a little too early,” said Wolff, showing he had pulled up slightly short of his marks.

“This meant the mechanic had to apply the impact wrench at an angle. The awkward angle damaged the wheel nut and we couldn’t bring it down,” said Wolff.

But when speaking to the media in Baku, Wolff blamed the media for making a mess of his comments. “The media has made a mess of what has been said,” Wolff said.

“It’s always difficult when the car is not in the perfect position. But we don’t see the perfect position [from any driver]. Valtteri didn’t make any mistake,” Wolff concluded.

Will Mercedes and Toto Wolff keep Bottas for 2022?

Bottas has had terrible luck in 2021. He had a slow pit stop in Bahrain, slipped from pole in Portugal, pit stop disaster in Monaco, and was given a different wing from Lewis, which made him slower in the race. He is currently sixth in the drivers’ standings.

Toto Wolff has a tough decision to either keep Bottas or swap him with Russell. Bottas needs a win to get back on track with his season and keep his chances to stay in Mercedes.
