Alain Prost Explains Why Fernando Alonso Reminds Him of Michael Schumacher

When Fernando Alonso exited F1 following the horrendous phase with McLaren, it looked like his career was all but over, with much younger drivers lining up for a seat in the sport. However, the Spaniard never stopped, as he continued to race in other series, keeping the adrenaline going, and not opting to catch a break.

And it ultimately paid off, as Alpine were ready to welcome the 2-time world champion into their team for 2021 and beyond. Considering his abundant love for racing, former world champion, Alain Prost, reckoned that Alonso resembles a lot like Michael Schumacher.

Prost’s view on Fernando Alonso

During a podcast, Prost opined that Alonso, like Schumacher, carries a high level of passion for racing. “What has always impressed me the most is that he’s a little bit like Michael,” he told the F1 Nation podcast.

“They are passionated by racing, you know. And they never stop. When Fernando’s not on the track, he would go as go-kart.

“And obviously, he has done many different things like Endurance or Dakar or whatever. But they need to drive. They are at a different level.

Alonso found himself in several other racing series following the brief haul from F1. Apart from Dakar and Endurance championship, the Spaniard was also a part of the IndyCar series, 24 hours Le Mans and WeatherTech SportsCar championship.

The 4-time world champion reckoned that Alonso, who was once indulged in several on-track controversies, has changed over the years.

Fernando is very professional, he is very honest with himself and everybody, he is very good for the team,” the 66-year-old said.

If that’s the secret, you can always be a bit worried about what happened with Fernando in all the teams, and that’s not the case today. He’s very good, you know. So, it’s a big surprise but a good surprise for us. He’s a very nice guy.”

So, after a positive weekend in Baku, can Alonso shine yet again at the French Grand Prix? Well, we’ll know soon enough.
