The return of Mexican boxing great, Julio Cesar Chavez took center stage in the boxing world. The former multi-weight world champion fought as the main event of a lengthy card, which even featured the brother of current Mexican superstar, Canelo Alvarez.

Alvarez’s brother, Ramon Alvarez faced Julio Cesar Chavez’s son, Omar Chavez on the undercard. The 34-year-old Alvarez beat Omar Chavez in the battle of the two great Mexican boxing families. And Alvarez gave his immediate reaction to the fight.

The 56-1-2 boxer spoke after the fight and said, “He’s very happy to be here. He’s very glad that we have this opportunity. It was really sad that he had to face the Chavez family. But obviously, the pride of getting to see his nephew [brother].” [via translator]

Thus, this comment from Alvarez showed that the victory was bitter-sweet since it was against the Chavez family. However, it confirmed that the current super-middleweight champion was proud of his older brother, who followed his advice to the tee and took home the unanimous decision victory.

Why is Canelo Alvarez sad about facing the Chavez family?

The reaction from Alvarez may surprise some considering his brother had just put on an incredible performance. While he said he was happy for his brother, it was clearly bitter-sweet. So why was Canelo Alvarez sad about his brother facing Julio Cesar Chavez’s son?

Julio Cesar Chavez has God-like status in Mexico. The former multi-weight world champion, and boxing legend was the face of boxing in the late ‘80s and ‘90s, especially in Mexico. And Canelo has already previously admitted that Chavez was his idol growing up.

The event was supposed to be an enjoyable day for the Chavez family. He fought as the main event and both his sons were set to fight on the undercard. Thus, the legendary boxer would’ve hoped for all of them to get the victory. However, Ramon Alvarez’s victory over Omar Chavez may have hampered the perfect send off for Chavez.
