Wimbledon Championships 2021 Draw and Bracket: Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty in Same Half, Iga Swiatek to meet Sabalenka

The women’s draw for the 2021 Wimbledon Championships is out and pits seven-time champion, Serena Williams, in a potential third-round slugfest with 2018 winner Angelique Kerber.

However, this is just one of many mouthwatering contests that the draw promises as current women’s World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty will open her campaign against fit-again Carla Suarez Navarro. The Spaniard, who recently emerged cancer-free, came back from retirement at the French Open and is also set to feature in her country’s squad for the Tokyo Olympics.

Johanna Konta, Britain’s biggest championship hope in the women’s field, will face tricky Czech star Katerina Siniakova in her first-round fixture. The Czech took down Serena at WTA Parma earlier this year.

Injury-plagued Canadian star Bianca Andreescu runs into in-form Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the opening round. Cornet sent her packing at WTA Berlin, a grass court tune-up to Wimbledon.

Serena Williams also has Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic in her half

Serena has been handed a rough road to the final as she has Barty, American teen tennis sensation Coco Gauff and Swiss starlet Belinda Bencic in her draw.

While the shock withdrawal of 2019 champion Simona Halep has robbed the women’s draw of some sheen, the excitement is still building up to the start of the Championships this year.

The women’s championships has a lot at stake for 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena as she is bidding to end her prolonged wait for an elusive 24th career title on the hallowed lawns, which will put her on level on with the legendary Margaret Court’s career haul.

However, that subtext apart, the women’s draw promises loads of absorbing action as the likes of Barty, former champion Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka will battle for glory alongside a clutch of Next-Gen stars led by World No. 9 Iga Swiatek, reigning French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, Gauff and hard-hitting Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka, among others.

Coco Gauff will also be among the title favorites this year

Gauff, who as a wildcard entrant became the toast of All England with her brutal takedown of five-time champion Venus Williams and remarkable run to the fourth round in 2018, is coming off a sizzling cay court season this year and will be seen as one of the title favorites going into Wimbledon.

Swiatek, who followed up her stunning surge to the Roland-Garros title in 2020 with a quarter-final finish this year, will also be among the contenders for the title.

Krejcikova, who lifted her maiden Grand Slam title at the French capital this year, will also fancy living another dream at All England. However, Halep apart, Naomi Osaka will be conspicuous by her absence at the Championships this year.
