Dustin Poirier and His Fights Against Max Holloway

UFC lightweight star Dustin Poirier is living his best life right now. He is set to fight former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor, for the second time in a year at UFC 264. Needless to say, it is the main event bout, as the two fighters stand across the octagon for the third time to determine who is the better fighter once and for all.

They split their first two fights with two knockout finishes. However, Poirier has the upper hand as he recently knocked out Conor in the second round of their UFC 257 to finish off an incredible upset. Additionally, Conor’s not the only champion he has fought. Poirier has had an incredibly long career in the UFC and has fought Khabib Nurmagomedov, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, and Max Holloway.

However, it’s his rivalry with Max Holloway, which was the most lopsided one in his career.

This was Poirier’s fourth fight in the UFC, and he fought in the featherweight division back then. However, this was even bigger for Holloway as this was his UFC debut and his fifth professional MMA fight. Both of them were looking to impress in this UFC 143 fight in 2012.

Nevertheless, there could only be one victor, and the fight did not go Holloway’s way. It was all over in the first round as Poirier got a triangle armbar on Holloway inside four minutes. That fight is still significant in Holloway’s career as it is the only time he has ever been finished in a fight. All five of his other losses have come via decisions.

This time around, Holloway had found incredible success at featherweight and had defended his title twice after winning it against Jose Aldo. Meanwhile, Poirier had moved up to lightweight and was coming off an incredible victory over Eddie Alvarez, which earned him performance of the night honors.

Holloway moved up to lightweight in a bid to try and emulate Conor McGregor to become a double champ and was immediately put in a match against Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight belt. This time around, there was no finish as the match went the distance.

However, it wasn’t good for Holloway as Poirier had dominated him for the entirety of the fight, and the difference in their weight was too much for Holloway to overcome. Holloway showed incredible heart to see the fight out. Still, it wasn’t enough as the judges awarded Poirier a unanimous decision victory, sealing their duel and proving that Poirier was the better fighter.
