Derek Chauvin sentencing LIVE: Cop who killed George Floyd faces 40 years in jail over murder that horrified the world

DEREK Chauvin is set to be sentenced today for killing George Floyd and the disgraced cop faces 40 years in jail over the murder that outraged the world.

Chauvin, 45, faces decades in prison and legal experts are predicting that this may amount to 20 to 25 years, according to the Associated Press.

Chauvin is widely expected to appeal but he is still facing trial on federal civil rights charges. So too do the three other fired officers who haven’t had their state trials yet.

Chauvin will be sentenced only on the most serious charge under Minnesota law, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years. But the practical maximum sentence Judge Peter Cahill could impose could be up to 30 years without risk of being overturned on appeal, according to case law.

Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for pressing his knee against Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes as he said “I can’t breathe” and went limp.
