Eddie Hearn Reveals Canelo Alvarez’s Light Heavyweight Ambitions, Say He Could Fight Artur Beterbiev

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is well renowned for his unprecedented grit and tenacity. Already capturing the titles at multiple weight divisions, the pound-for-pound best is now on a quest to unify the titles at super middleweight.

In the road towards the undisputed crown of the super middleweight division, Alvarez is likely to face IBF champion Caleb Plant next.

However, he doesn’t plan on staying in the division for too long, per his promoter Eddie Hearn. In a recent interview with Constantino Garcia, Hearn said that Canelo Alvarez could move up soon to the light heavyweight division.

A fight against one of the most ferocious names in the light heavyweight division could be on the cards for the super middleweight champion, he indicated.

“Canelo Alvarez is the absolute pound-for-pound king. He has the right to fight whoever he wants. But, the good news is, he is fighting champion after champion after champion.

“So you don’t have to worry about Saul, he’ll fight anyone. Maybe after this he will go to light heavyweight and he may fight Beterbiev and he might fight Bivol. He doesn’t care,” he says.

Canelo Alvarez and his Light Heavyweight enterprise

In his lone appearance at 175, Canelo Alvarez defeated long-time champ Sergey Kovalev in a tremendous fashion. He knocked out the ‘Krusher’ and laid claim to his WBO strap.

Alvarez, who is a natural 154 pounder, was at a significant size disadvantage in the fight against the Russian. Kovalev was seemingly getting the better of Alvarez in the fight initially.

However, the Mexican displayed tremendous heart throughout the fight, pushing forth relentlessly. Slowly working his way to close the distance, Alvarez brutally knocked out the Russian in the 11th round.

A heavy left hook wobbled Kovalev and Alvarez finished the fight with a stiff right to become a 4-division weight champion. After the fight, Alvarez moved down to super middleweight to focus on one division at one time.

In an apparent return to the light heavyweight division, Canelo Alvarez aims at the top, again. Eddie Hearn divulges that a fight against Russian knockout machine Artur Beterbiev could materialize in the future.

“He told me about Beterbiev. I said, ‘Woah, shouldn’t we fight Bivol first?’ ‘No we want him!’ That’s the beauty of Saul Alvarez,” Hearn said.

Beterbiev has knocked out all opposition that has stood in his way. To say that Beterbiev hits hard would be an understatement. He reigns over the light heavyweight division as the WBC and IBF unified champion. Well, the same can be said for Canelo Alvarez. Both parties have shown interest in the fight for some time now.

The question is: Would we see Alvarez move up a division again, face the dangerous champion, and reign supreme? Let us know what you think in the comment section.
