Warning: spoilers ahead for Loki.

A Loki theory has explored whether the identity of Loki and Sylvie’s biological mother could be key to the Marvel series, while also explaining some of the Thor throwbacks viewers have witnessed so far.

In episode three of Loki on Disney Plus, the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) gets to know the ‘Loki variant’, who goes by Sylvie, a little better as they embark on an apocalyptic mission together.

During their chat, Loki learns that Sylvie found out at an early age that she was adopted, while he tells her about his adopted mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), who he describes as ‘good’ and ‘purely decent’.

Sylvie, on the other hand, is more evasive when asked about her own mother, stating: ‘I barely remember her. Just blips of a dream at this point.’

A Reddit user who goes by the handle ‘fiascoist’ shared a lengthy post detailing the significance of Sylvie’s response, amid the possibility of discovering who Loki’s biological mother is.

In the MCU, baby Loki is discovered on Jotunheim by Odin (Anthony Hopkins), having been abandoned by his biological father Laufey (Colm Feore), leader of the Frost Giants.

When Odin picks Loki up, the baby shapeshifts from looking like a Frost Giant to resembling a human – an occurrence that feeds into the Reddit user’s theory about his ancestry on his mother’s side.

In their view, the fact that Loki was able to shapeshift from birth and changed to look like his adopted father could mean that in Sylvie’s timeline, she may have been taken by her biological mother after her birth, and thus shapeshifted to look like her, hence why she is a female version of Loki.

Plus, while it has only been referenced in a promo video that Loki is gender-fluid in the MCU, this theory could mean that his gender-fluidity may be addressed in the series.

The theory doesn’t end there. Loki’s shapeshifting abilities have been well-documented in the MCU, having shown off his skills in previous films, when he memorably transformed into Chris Evans’ Captain America to annoy Thor.

‘We’ve seen another species in the MCU with the ability to shapeshift – The Skrulls,’ the fan behind the theory wrote, in reference to the alien species introduced in Captain Marvel.

So while it may seem like a far stretch – could this mean that Loki and Sylvie’s biological mother could be a Skrull, which is where their shapeshifting abilities came from?

When Loki is first brought to the TVA (Time Variance Authority) in the Marvel series, Mobius M Mobius (Owen Wilson) shows him a montage of his life, including his past and the future he would have had if he hadn’t breached the timeline.

Particular focus is placed on the death of Frigga in the second Thor film, which Loki inadvertently played a part in when he unknowingly sent the Dark Elves her way.

Perhaps this means that the emphasis on the Thor throwbacks is leading to the big reveal of Loki and Sylvie’s biological mother?

With only three episodes to go, who knows how many twists and turns are going to be packed into the second half of the show.

Loki returns on Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
