Katherine Ryan and Bobby Kootstra might just have welcomed a beautiful baby boy together but the comedian admits marriage is something she ‘feared’ as she is ‘hyper independent’.
The 38-year-old opened up about rekindling with her childhood sweetheart when she least expected it – and spending a whole lot more time together due to lockdown.
She told Metro.co.uk how the experience changed her comedy routine: ‘My show is so different – my last one was all about not needing anyone and being hyper independent, and I stand by everything I said in that show.
‘I think that the reason that I found Bobby is genuinely because I wasn’t looking for him and I was happy being alone, and then my life just drastically changed, changed, changed.
‘Marriage is exactly what I feared,’ she joked. ‘I was like, “I can’t work anymore. I can’t see my friends. I have to cover my face. I’m not allowed out of the house”.
‘Covid and marriage coinciding for someone hyper independent like me is not ideal, but we got through it. It’s fine!’

The couple welcomed their son Fred into the world on June 14, just two weeks after Katherine announced her pregnancy publicly.
Katherine also has a 12-year-old daughter, Violet, from a previous relationship and revealed that Violet is incredible with her baby brother.
Revealing what life was like as a mother of two now, Katherine explained: ‘It’s fine actually and I feel so badly because I know that people have a hard time.
‘I had a hard time when my daughter was born. I was 25 and I didn’t know what was going on, I questioned a lot of my life choices, I was really emotional and I really felt alone as my family was so far away.
‘And now I don’t know what it is about this little boy, he just eats and sleeps and he is so lovely. I think I appreciate it a lot more because I’m older and because I have a live in babysitter essentially, because Violet is 12.
‘She loves him and he’s so small. I don’t think many 12-year-olds see newborns – you don’t really see babies out in the wild until they’re like three months – and she loves him. She sees me carrying him around and stuff and she’s like, “I’ll do that”. She’s got the phone in one hand and him and the other and I’m like, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!”’
Katherine’s life hacks include easy to make rice, a boiling water tap and having a child 12 years before your next one so they can help out (Picture: Colin Baldwin/VeeTee Rice)
Katherine joked: ‘That would be my life hack – just have one 12 years before the other one and then it’s really easy. I have a husband who’s really, really, really hands on and wonderful and that is just a game changer. I can’t complain.’
As well as timing the age gap between her children perfectly, Katherine revealed another of her life hacks is a hot tap in her kitchen to dispense boiling water, and easy to make rice.
She revealed: ‘I eat a lot of rice and I always have as a child because we didn’t have bread or pasta in the house because there were family allergies.

‘So my mum substituted with rice all the time and she was so good at cooking rice, but I’m not. I always put in a little bit too much water or a little bit not enough. So VeeTee genuinely has been a staple of my house for a long time and my daughter can pop in the microwave. I hate to say that we are the same level of cooking but it’s really fluffy, perfect rice every time.’
Katherine Ryan has teamed up with Veetee Rice to host #UpYourFluffGame, a social media series daring consumers to find something fluffier than its steam filtered rice. Head over to veetee.com to find out more.
