Alison Hammond was left in disbelief at Matthew Wright’s criticism of the new Princess Diana statue on This Morning.

Matthew admitted he ‘hated’ the statue which was unveiled for what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday, going on to describe it as ‘frumpy’ and ‘too wide at the waist’.

‘The statue, I’m sorry, I just hate it. I hate it,’ Matthew, 55, admitted. ‘Diana was just always – my mum used the phrase “with it” which isn’t a very “with it” phrase.

‘But she was always super, super cool and fashionable and I just think it looks frumpy.’

‘I like it!’ Alison countered, with Matthew adding: ‘It’s too wide at the waist.’

Visibly shocked, Alison, 46, asked: ‘Are you being serious?’ while Dermot O’Leary, 48, laughed and scolded him by saying: ‘Matthew!’

‘Yeah I hate it, I hate it,’ Matthew concluded.

Alison wasn’t having it, saying: ‘I think it’s really lovely.’

The statue of Diana was unveiled during a ceremony, with her sons Prince William and Prince Harry in attendance.

She would have been turning 60 this week, with the nation paying tribute to the beloved princess.

While the statue, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley with the input of William and Harry, aims to commemorate Diana, Matthew’s not alone in his criticism of it.

Lorraine Kelly ripped into the artwork on her morning show, claiming it ‘doesn’t do her justice’.

Meanwhile Piers Morgan tweeted: ‘Let’s be honest – it’s not a great statue of Diana.’

This Morning paid tribute to Diana this week, welcoming former lookalike Nicky Lilley on the to ‘show what she might have looked like’ if she’d been alive today.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield also brought Gok Wan on the show to speculate about what kind of fashion Diana would have worn today – but not everyone was convinced by the segments, with many viewers criticising them.

Diana died at age 36 in a car crash in 1997.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
