Loving Netflix’s Fear Street? 8 teen horrors to chill your summer

Fear Street has inspired nostalgia for teen horror (Picture: Rex/Netflix)

If you haven’t slept much this week, it’s safe to say you’ve probably watched Netflix’s new horror series Fear Street.

The first installment of the trilogy, Part 1: 1994, was released on July 2 and has been praised for refreshing the horror genre in a pandemic where new releases have understandably been slow at best.

Based on RL Stine’s teen horror novels, Fear Street Part 1: 1994 follows a group of high-schoolers who accidentally come across the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years.

However, don’t let the fact that this trilogy comes from the same creator as Goosebumps fool you – the scares that will play out aren’t for kids and will have viewers cowering in fear.

Many have long viewed 90s teen horror slashers as nothing more than a guilty pleasure but, fortunately, Fear Street has made them cool again.

Part 1 was clearly influenced by the slashers that have become classics like Scream while stirring reminders of more modern 80s and 90s-inspired horrors like Stranger Things.

If you’ve been loving Fear Street so far, here are similar movies and TV shows both old and new to satisfy your teen slasher fix…

Scream (1996)

It would be rude not to start with the teen slasher that reinvented the subgenre.

Directed by Kevin Williamson, the original Scream followed high school student Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as a ghostface mask-wearing serial killer began picking off her friends one by one, a year after the murder of her mother.

The original will forever remain iconic and * SPOILER * the opening scene of Fear Street Part 1: 1994 is clearly inspired by the fate of Drew Barrymore’s character.

For even more Scream, check out the TV series which aired for two seasons beginning in 2015.

Summer of 84 (2018)

An absolutely underrated gem.

Summer of 84, starring Caleb Emery and Graham Verchere, follows a group of teenage friends who spend their summer break spying on a neighbour who they suspect is a serial killer.

He’s also a police officer, so there’s that for an obstacle.

As they begin gathering evidence to desperately prove their theory, they get closer to the truth putting themselves at greater danger.

Summer of 84 is available to watch on Shudder via Amazon Prime.

Stranger Things (2016)

Credited for sparking the current trend of 80s/90s-themed movies and series, Stranger Things is the perfect option for a teen throwback with a modern twist.

The show that turned Millie Bobby Brown and cronies into stars has a sci-fi element, sees a small town thrown into chaos when a young boy disappears, causing his mother, a police chief and his friends to confront a supernatural forces in order to get him back.

It’s still going strong after four seasons to plenty to sink your teeth into.

Stranger Things is available to watch on Netflix.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Another classic to stir your nostalgia, I Know What You Did Last Summer was another Kevin Williamson creation after the success of Scream.

Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt in the lead, it followed a group of friends who accidentally run over a man on an isolated road after a night of partying. Instead of calling the police, they leave him for dead but he returns a year later as a hook-wielding serial killer hellbent on enacting revenge.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr fell in love after meeting on set of this horror film, so that’s enough reason alone to add it to your watch list.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)

This super dark twist on the Sabrina The Teenage Witch tale will leave you with chills nearly just as much as Fear Street.

In this series, Sabrina is forced to choose between the witch world of her family and her human friends as she approaches her 16th birthday.

It wrapped up in 2020 after four seasons so you can binge-watch and get closure at the end.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is available to watch on Netflix.

Slasher (2016)

This anthology series is another underrated hit you’ll be gutted you missed.

Each series focuses on a different serial killer who targets and traps his victims in seriously sadistic ways.

However, you can bet that the face behind the mask is almost always someone close to home.

Slasher is available to watch on Shudder via Amazon Prime.

The Babysitter (2018)

If you’ve ever watched a teen slasher – CC: Halloween – you’ll know there’s always a babysitter in the midst.

With Netflix’s The Babysitter, it’s actually the one watching over the kids who they need to worry about.

Cole (Judah Lewis) loves his babysitter (Samara Weaving) Bee – that is until he has to spend his night evading Bee’s band of killers who will stop at nothing to prevent Cole from spilling their dark secret.

If you love this, you can also watch the follow-up, The Babysitter: Killer Queen.

The Babysitter is available to watch on Netflix.

Urban Legend (1998)

We’ve all exchanged scary stories with our friends as kids but, what would you do if those urban legends came real?

That’s the reality for this group of college students when the urban legend of a professor who murdered students 25 years previously, appears to be at it again. One of the students, Natalie (Alicia Witt), discovers she has ties to all the victims being murdered on campus and finds herself fighting for survival.
