Russell Finally Puts Mercedes F1 Rumours To Rest – “Nothing Will Be Announced in Silverstone”

Rumors of George Russell joining Mercedes continue, and only builds up as the paddock heads to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. However, fans will have to wait another day, as the Brit himself confirmed that there no announcement waiting to be made at the Silverstone.

The 23-year-old is part of the prestigious Mercedes junior driver program, which means he could drive for the Silver Arrows in the near future. Furthermore, Russell’s contract at Williams is expiring at the end of the season, giving the Brackley-based squad the perfect opportunity to grab the young talent.

Russell confirms that nothing is set in stone with regards to Mercedes

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, being asked about his potential move to Mercedes, Russell laughed and replied, “I signed with Mercedes five or six years ago, now that is a hundred percent true!”

“As everybody knows, they look after me. With regards to my drive for next year, nothing has been signed nor sealed and nothing will be announced in Silverstone.”

“I can let you know that,” Russell concluded.

The decision lies with Wolff about the second seat at Mercedes

The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff will have the final say of who will drive alongside Lewis Hamilton next year. Coincidentally. Valtteri Bottas’s contract is also running out at the end of the season and hasn’t been offered a new one that will see him with the team next season.

Down at Williams, Russell has his deal with the Grove-based squad expiring this year. This gives the Austrian boss a crucial decision to make, as it will determine the future of the team.

Toto said, “We always said we wanted to give it the next few races to gain more clarity. [We are] also happy Valtteri’s racing in Austria in my opinion was really good and he needs to consolidate that. He’s a known factor.”
