Emmy nominations 2021: Pose’s Mj Rodriguez makes history as first trans performer to land major acting nod

Pose star Mj Rodriguez has made history after becoming the first transgender nominee in a major Emmy Awards acting category.

The 73rd Emmy Awards nomination announcements left TV fans delighted after the star landed a nomination for outstanding actress in a drama series.

The fan-favorite was nominated for her formidable portrayal of house mother and nurse Blanca Rodriguez on FX’s ballroom culture period drama.

The nomination was her first-ever nod from the Television Academy, as she joined co-star Billy Porter in landing a solo nom this year.

It is the singer/actress’ first-ever attention from the Television Academy and makes her the third openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy.

Her nod comes after multi-hyphenate actress and filmmaker Rain Valdez, who received an outstanding actress in a short-form comedy or drama series nom for Razor Tongue in 2020.

Meanwhile, Laverne Cox made Emmy’s History in 2014 as the first-ever openly transgender actor nominated in the guest drama actress category for her work as Sophia Burset in Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black.

Cox received three more, all in the same category, in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

If Rodriguez wins in September, she will make history again as the first-ever trans performer to take home an Emmy statue.
