British Grand Prix: What Is the Hamilton Straight at Silverstone?

As we head to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, there is a slight change done to the track;” but not a physical change. The main straight down the pit lane has been named the “Hamilton straight”. This is to recognize the achievement of Lewis Hamilton in the sport of Formula One.

The Mercedes drive accomplished an impossible feat last season, and that was to equal Michael Schumacher’s title record. In order to celebrate this achievement, the main straight at Silverstone was named after the Knight.

Hamilton will look forward to zipping down the Hamilton straight

No other driver in Formula One has achieved this, to have a part of the track to be named after someone. The 7-times world champion is surely looking forward to race this weekend and will make sure that it will be one to remember for.

The 36-year-old is hoping to beat his arch-rivals, and see the chequered flag in first place down the main straight, as his team cheers him on from the pit wall.

Lewis was lost for words when he told about the change at Silverstone

Speaking to David Coulthard after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the former driver told Hamilton about what was coming to Silverstone that will be remembered for years to come in the history of Formula One. The announcement left the world champion speechless.

He said, “Wow that is insane, no way.  That is definitely a curveball. I don’t even know what to say. I remember watching Silverstone and watching Nigel Mansell and seeing that incredible crowd and I have also experienced it year on year. It is something so close to my heart. You would have experienced too, and such a proud moment.”

“I am blown away. No driver has had that, so I am very grateful, very humbled, and a big thank you to everyone for supporting me. I hope I can continue to make the BRDC and the Brits proud for the time I am here racing,” Lewis concluded.

Will Lewis find the motivation and pace and flies down the Hamilton starting this weekend, and bring a victory for the Brackley-based squad? We are just a few days from race day and we shall soon find out.
