Outlander fans outraged by Emmys snub after Bridgerton lands 12 nominations

Outlander fans aren’t pleased with the Television Academy after it was announced that smash-hit Netflix series Bridgerton has bagged 12 Emmy nominations for its debut season.

Tuesday saw the full nominations list for the 73rd primetime Emmys revealed to the public and many were thrilled to see the recording-breaking costume drama land nods in several major categories including leading actor and best drama series.

However, the news came as a bit of a blow for Outlander fans who have seen their beloved costume drama snubbed from nominations in those categories since it launched in 2014.

Indeed, the show’s loyal viewers couldn’t help but share their frustration online after witnessing a series with many similarities to Outlander managing to get the critical recognition that has long evaded the Starz drama.

Taking to Twitter, one person tweeted: ‘How the #Emmys could nominate Bridgerton for top categories while ignoring @Outlander_STARZ through the years is unfathomable. It was entertaining but totally lacking the depth of Outlander. Such a shame.’

Another agreed: ‘Bridgerton over Outlander is a joke. Not nearly the acting, sets, story or character development.’

Bridgerton with 12 noms, Outlander none? Someone has their head buried in the sand. Bridgerton was lovely, not taking away from that at all. But Outlander is that & SO MUCH MORE! Way to miss the mark #EmmyAwards2021 pic.twitter.com/AOKwppNTVC

So the Bridgerton guy gets an Emmy nomination and Sam and Outlander are always snubbed? WTF??

‘Although, I do love Bridgerton but Outlander is a whole lot of level. They’ve been snubbing the show and the great cast,’ one frustrated fan stated.

Another argued: ‘Bridgerton was a fun Droughtlander show. However, the stories written by Diana Gabaldon and lived by the OL cast and we fans live thru vicariously, are so encompassing, deep, touching, educational, gosh I could go on and on. You know/We know! How come #Emmys doesn’t? [angry emoji] and sad!’

‘Bridgerton was pretty a bit of fluff but Outlander was so much more substantive in every way acting dialogue storyline history costumes and scenery. It’s baffling,’ one Twitter user stated.

I’m seriously not being biased here but Outlander S5 was better than Bridgerton and it wasn’t nominated🙄 https://t.co/rkGn0HrY3j pic.twitter.com/c4NGluDx07

I enjoyed Bridgerton. Truly. And it deserves the Emmy noms for some categories. But shows like Outlander and Lucifer, which are are far superior in emotion, humanity and love, were wrongly snubbed. And I wish they got the recognition which is long overdue https://t.co/AKx1gXIOl6

How the hell was Bridgerton nominated when Outlander wasn’t? I liked Bridgerton, but for it to be nominated over Outlander ….. No.

Someone else said: “I completely agree. Tobias [Menzies] should have had a nomination for Outlander not The Crown. His portrayal of Black Jack Randall was off the scale whilst at the same time playing Frank!”

Ever since Outlander launched in 2014, viewers have been swept up in a world of romance and adventure, as former World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) finds herself transported back to mid-18th Century Scotland, where she meets Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Since then, it has only been nominated for four Emmys and has failed to bag a win.

Like I said yesterday, I don’t think Bridgerton, while entertaining, is Best Drama worthy. But it didn’t slight Outlander. I always call it like I see it. Outlander’s best quality as a show was S1, 2, and maybe 3. The actors got screwed, but 5 & definitely not 4 aren’t up there🤷🏼‍♀️

Outlander > Bridgerton in every single way possible. How @SamHeughan and @caitrionambalfe haven’t won all the things blows my mind. https://t.co/caIyMMf71C

Over the years, it has been recognized in the categories of outstanding music composition, outstanding period costume, and outstanding production design.

However, there is one big reason why the show did not receive any nominations this year as it missed this year’s Emmys eligibility window by several weeks.

The Starz drama finished airing on May 10 last year and shows nominated in any category had to have been released between 1 June 2020 and 31 May 2021.

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, while seasons one to five are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
