Netflix and PlayStation partnership hinted at by datamined images
Although rarely seen this is a stock image and doesn’t seem to have been create for Netflix (pic: Twitter)
The new game streaming service from Netflix appears to be codenamed Shark and it may have a very important backer.
The recent reveal that Netflix intends to stream video games, as well as movies and shows, came as no great surprise, but it seems their plans may be more advanced than anyone realised – if the images datamined from the current app are taken at face value.
Respected dataminer Steve Moser has discovered a number of video game related images on the Netflix iOS app, including a logo for ‘Shark’ and one for ‘N Games’.
Most surprising though is a number of images relating to the PlayStation, including artwork for Ghost Of Tsushima and images of PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers.
There are a hundred different reasons why the PlayStation images might be there, including Netflix simply using them as placeholders that aren’t meant to be seen publicly.
One obvious interpretation though is that this is a sign that Netflix and Sony have signed some kind of deal to allow streaming of PlayStation games, which does seem a sensible way to try and counter Microsoft’s services.

Sony already has a close relationship with Netflix, involving both its movies and animations, which gives Netflix first dibs on movies such as Uncharted and the Venom sequel.
That doesn’t have anything to do with games, but if the companies already have a close working relationship it’s even easier to imagine some kind of deal being made for the PlayStation side of things.
If nothing else, Netflix seems to be in quite a hurry to get its game streaming service going, with a plan to have at least a limited service up and running within the next 12 months.
