What’s Next for Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano?

154 lbs world champions- Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano went on a war against each other, citing one of the most gruesome encounters of recent times. However, it didn’t bring them anything, as the fight ended in a controversial split decision draw. While Charlo didn’t see himself losing, the official scorecard and several other suggestions had favored Brian Castano to hold similar importance in the bout.

Hence, the historic main-event ended without an official winner on board. Furthermore, the super welterweight division is yet to see a champion holding four world titles simultaneously. That said, the fight leaves the door open to several more possibilities. But what does it do to Brian Castano’s and Jermell Charlo’s combat future ?

Not to forget, they still have their respective world titles around the waist. ‘Iron Man’ Charlo holds the WBC, WBA (super), and IBF super welterweight titles. Meanwhile, Brian Castano also has his WBO strap. Hence there are many moves that might allure the champions to re-appear in action shortly.

The intense first fight clearly validates a rematch between them. Even though if it doesn’t happen instantly, Charlo vs Castano 2 would be thrilling to watch. Besides, the fight would also resurrect the undisputed clash at 154 lbs. Meanwhile, the close challenge would help to promote the second collision.

Hence, it might also be a PPV success. As legacy and glory would all fall under the bracket, this rematch needs to happen for the obvious reasons. Charo and Castano would also have their individual plans from this point and it further expands the ride.

Jermell Charlo vs Erislandy Lara

As Lara holds the WBA (regular) 154 lbs title, he can bring ‘Iron Man’ into another undisputed unification clash in the future. Lara has already fought Castano in 2019, which was another split decision draw for ‘El Boxi’. So, Lara may not want to rematch Castano at this point.

But a fight against Jermell Charlo would be tricky and big. Besides legacy, it would add financial success to Lara’s name. Moreover, Charlo can also dream of becoming an undisputed champion again by going against a top-tier opponent. So, it’s one fight that makes absolute sense right now.

Title defenses and mandatory contenders

Both Charlo and Castano have their respective mandatory opponents. While they continue to tout their world titles, they would never run out of rivals. Meanwhile, several big names might pop up before them. From Ismail Madrimov to Sebastian Fundora, there’s a long list of opponents awaiting.

These opponents can either help to rust off the champions from inactivity or can be brutal reality checks for them. Tonight’s fight was the biggest sample of it, which showed an experienced Jermell Charlo struggle opposite the undefeated Brian Castano.

The vast 154 lbs roster reflects umpteen A-listers. So, it demands to see an evolution from all the residing champions since the competition would never fade away. While there’s a lot on the line next for both Charlo and Castano, they would also have to return to the win column shortly.
