Many of the past stars of Love Island have gone on to carve out hugely successful careers in modelling, fashion, influencing and television – but now, we have our very first Islander turned Olympian.
Series five winner Greg O’Shea has landed in Tokyo as part of Team Ireland at the Olympics, and he has been giving his followers a peek into his journey.
The 26-year-old shared a snap to Instagram outside Dublin Airport ahead of his flight to Japan, writing: ‘The Olympic journey has started !
‘Thanks so much to everyone who messaged me and to all the family, friends and partners that waved us off at the airport 💚 Next stop 🔜 Tokyo!’
Love Island’s Alex George was among those wishing the athlete luck, commenting: ‘Good luck mate.’
Since landing, Greg has shared pictures and videos from the Olympic village dining hall, saying that he is ‘spoilt for choice’ with all the meal options, and showed off his chopstick skills.

Greg’s rugby sevens team was selected for the Olympics after a dramatic win over France at their qualifying tournament in Monaco.
The Limerick-born athlete had only been called onto the squad a week earlier to replace Gavin Mullin, who was injured.
The team is the first Irish rugby team to qualify for the Olympics, with Greg calling their ticket to the event ‘the stuff of dreams’.
The men’s rugby sevens competition kicks off next week on July 26, with Ireland facing teams from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Great Britain, Japan, Kenya, Korea, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.

An Olympic medal and half a £50,000 prize for sunning yourself for two weeks would be a pretty impressive list of achievements for the CV…
Greg was a late arrival to the Love Island villa in 2019 and after just a fortnight in Spain, he won the whole thing after coupling up with fan favourite Amber Gill.
The couple dated after leaving the villa, but split up after just five weeks together – with reports claiming Greg had dumped Amber by text.
However, Greg denied this and said that their long-distance relationship and differing ambitions weren’t going to work.

He told the Mail Online: ‘We did the whole after the show thing and then it got to us speaking to each other away from the cameras and she asked “are we going to be boyfriend and girlfriend? Are we going to be a proper couple?”
‘I said to her “realistically, I don’t know how this is going to work, you’re in England and everyone wants a bit of you, you have your clothing deals and I’m going back to Ireland and going to try and do the Olympics.”’
While Greg has achieved his sporting dream, Amber, 23, has been one of the most successful islanders to come from the show, launching her own weight loss programme, bagging an ITV show with fellow winner Kem Cetinay, and partnering with fashion brand Oh Polly.
