Defending and Former champions Dominic Thiem and Stanislas Wawrinka Raise Concerns Over US Open 2021 Participation
Dominic Thiem and Stanislas Wawrinka are going through a rough patch in their career. Continuing with their woes of recent times, both players have withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio. Stan and Thiem have been suffering injuries for the past two to three months.
On the other hand, Dusan Lajovic and John Millman have secured a move into the main draw; both of them will feature at the tournament without having to play the qualifiers.

Dominic Thiem and Stanislas Wawrinka are on the road towards recovery from their injuries
Dominic Thiem injured his right wrist during his French Open first-round match, earlier in May. Stanislas Wawrinka has been suffering an injury on his left foot since March; he last played in March at the Qatar Open in Doha. Their injuries forced them to miss out on two consecutive Grand Slam events, the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships.
Dominic has also decided to withdraw from the National Bank Open in Toronto. He has made the decision keeping in mind that the US Open begins two weeks after that. Thiem has expressed his eagerness to defend his US Open title in the past. He will, in all probability, be fit for the event in New York, however, won’t play any warmup tournaments in the lead up to it.
Dusan Lajovic has had two quarterfinal exits in his last two events, whereas John is currently playing at the Olympics. His form and consistency haven’t been the best this year with a 10-16 win-loss record.

Thiem and Stan’s poor year
Dominic Thiem has a 9-9 win-loss record in 2021, whereas Stanislas enjoys a 3-3 record. However, these records don’t do justice to their stature. Thiem had to withdraw from his first-round match at the French Open due to an unforeseen injury, having hurt his wrist during the match.
Stanislas has not had the age factor in his favor apart from struggling for form. His left foot injury caused him trouble getting back on the court, as it has been four months since his injury.
The fans are hopeful of the two players making a comeback at the US Open in late August. The tournament will be a big ask for the two stars, as they will be back after a long break. Without any tournament experience, how difficult will it get for them?
