MTV’s The Real World is being revived for streaming service Paramount Plus
MTV’s The Real World is being revived for streaming service Paramount Plus.
The programme made a big impact in the early 90s, after emerging as one of the first popular reality shows ever made.
Now, the cast of the first season — Becky Blasband, Andre Comeau, Heather B. Gardner, Julie Gentry, Norman Korpi, Eric Nies and Kevin Powell — will return to the property in Soho, New York where the first season was set, Variety reports.
The show saw seven strangers come together to share an apartment in different cities around the world. The cameras continued to roll constantly as the cast explored issues like sex, discrimination, HIV, religion and drugs usage.
The original cast were last seen on screen together 20 years ago, when they reunited to appear on the 2001 special The Real World: Back to New York.
The reboot will feature on the streaming service as it launches on March 4.
‘MTV’s The Real World has been credited with creating the reality TV genre and was one of the first series that tackled important and yet unrepresented topics of the time, from HIV/AIDS, race, gender, orientation and religion,’ said Chris McCarthy, president of the MTV Entertainment Group.
‘With Paramount+ being the home to so many global reality hit franchises, it seems only fitting to bring back the franchise and cast that started it all.’
The Real World ran on MTV from 1992 to 2017, and most recently aired on Facebook Watch.
The show spawned several spin offs including the Road Rules and The Challenge Rules Challenge series.
