Jared Leto gave a nod to a Joker meme after the trailer for director Zack Snyder’s cut of superhero blockbuster Justice League dropped.

The moody trailer for the long-awaited version landed on Sunday creating a fair bit of buzz on social media – not only for the amount of never-before-seen footage, but the last few seconds when Jared pops up as the famous villain.

He says: ‘We live in a society where honour is a distant memory. Isn’t that right, Batman?’

The phrase ‘we live in a society’ is a quote which has been incorrectly attributed to the Joker over the years. It is a meme used online nowadays in a sarcastic way to share dissatisfaction at something or as a cutting response to a lofty but nonsensical statement. Before that it was used by people who genuinely thought they were on some sort of higher plane than the other ‘sheeple’ or ‘in-crowd’.

The phrase has not been stated in canon by any incarnation of the Joker…until now.

Fans lost it over the phrase when the Justice League trailer arrived, and the actor weighed in on the fun by sharing the clip on Twitter and adding, you guessed it, ‘We live in a society’ as a caption.

The debate among fans as to whether the line was included as a cheeky nod to the meme or was used in all seriousness rages on.

The new version, called Zack Snyder’s Justice League, includes new footage of heroes Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Superman (Henry Cavill), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Flash (Ezra Miller).

The director filmed a great chunk of the DC Comics superhero movie in 2017 before being replaced by Joss Whedon due to a family emergency.

When asked if any of Whedon’s footage made it into his cut, Zack was adamant that not a single frame would be included.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will land on streaming platform HBO Max on March 18.
