Super Mario 3D World launch three times bigger than Wii U – Games charts 13 February

Nintendo’s latest Wii U port has become the fastest selling video game of the year so far, as Little Nightmares 2 also does well.

Although it’s not up against much competition – Hitman 3 has been the only other big name release so far – Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is officially the biggest new video game launch of 2021.

Launch sales were almost three times that of the 2013 original, although the Wii U installed userbase was miniscule compared to the Switch and, somehow, the game managed to launch the same day as the PlayStation 4.

It becomes the third biggest launch for a Mario platformer on Switch, behind Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D All-Stars – with the game only selling a third that of the All-Stars collection.

Bandai Namco will also be please with the initial performance of Little Nightmares 2, which entered the charts at number seven this week.

That’s an impressive performance for what is essentially an indie game, which apart from anything would normally mean most sales are digital.

Finally, Spider-Man: Morales swung back into the charts, a sign that PlayStation 5 consoles are becoming more available, with Demon’s Souls also reappearing at number 17 this week.
