Former Formula One driver Marcus Ericsson won the Music City Grand Prix in the Indy500 series. This is Ericsson’s second victory of the season for the Chip Ganassi team. But the Swede had an eventful start as he crashed with Sébastien Bourdais just five laps into the race.

Ericsson continued the race after the crash, but Bourdais had to retire from the race. The incident gave the Chip Ganassi driver a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for the incident.

Marcus Ericsson wins the Music City GP despite crashing with Bourdais

As reported by Motorsport, The Swedish driver needed a new front wing after his crash with former Toro Rosso driver, Bourdais. Marcus was apologetic about the incident with the Chevrolet driver and served his penalty to get back into the race.

“I feel sorry for Seb and just got caught out there [on the first restart], when I thought they were going. I thought my race was over then. But then I got to repair the car, I got a stop and go [penalty] and we were dead last. It was all about trying to recover.” said Ericsson.

I’m just trying to figure out how I ended up winning the race: Marcus

The unlikely win left the former Sauber driver speechless and elated as he won his second race in IndyCar in 2021. When asked about his feelings after the race win,

” I’m just trying to figure out how I ended up winning the race after being up, flying, and seeing the sky on Lap 5 and thinking my race was over,” laughed Ericsson. “I can’t believe it! Got good air-time.” Marcus mentioned.

“In the end, when Colton was behind me, I had to do a really big fuel number to get us to the finish line and still keep him behind. That was one of the toughest challenges of my career and I’m very proud that I could keep him behind and keep the pace up. And that won me the race. “ said Ericsson.

Scott Dixon came home in second to secure a 1-2 for the Chip Ganassi Team. James Hinchcliffe, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Graham Rahal came home to round out the top five.
