There’s no denying that University Challenge is one of the trickier game shows on TV, with viewers constantly trying to outdo the students by guessing the answers before they do.
Of course, being students from some of the top colleges in the country, they can be hard to beat at times, especially when the questions prove really challenging.
But of course even the contestants get it wrong sometimes – and host Jeremy Paxman usually sees the funny side when they do.

Jeremy Paxman: ‘What is another name for ‘cherrypickers’ and ‘cheesemongers’?’
Contestant: ‘Homosexuals.’
Paxman: ‘No, they’re regiments in the British Army, who will be very upset with you.’
Bamber Gascoigne: ‘What was Gandhi’s first name?’
Contestant: ‘Goosey?’
Jeremy Paxman: ‘Timothy Dalton, Orson Welles, Toby Stephens and Michael Fassbender are among the actors who have played which romantic figure, the creation of Charlotte Bronte?’
Contestant: ‘Inspector Clouseau?
Jeremy Paxman: ‘Your music starter is a piece of popular music. 10 points if you can give me the name of the group performing.’ (The Message by Grandmaster Flash plays)
Contestant: ‘Sugarhill Gang?’
Jeremy Paxman: ‘No, you can hear a bit more Magdelen.’
Contestant: ‘Kool and the Gang?’
Meanwhile, this contestant proves that if you guess the same thing enough times you might just get there in the end.
A similar strategy was adopted by super-contender Eric Monkman when he was faced with paintings of Napoleon:
University Challenge continues on BBC Two on Monday nights at 8.30pm.
