Celebrity MasterChef: Happy Mondays star Bez trying to pronounce ‘anchovies’ is the best thing you’ll see today

Celebrity MasterChef’s Bez tickled us as he struggled to pronounce the word ‘anchovies’ in tonight’s first episode of the new series.

The Happy Mondays star, real name Mark Berry, was among the first five contestants to be put through their paces by Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

As Bez approached the third challenge, which was to create a dinner party dish, he started to list the components of his eye-watering main course.

‘I’m cooking mutton chops, a hogget mince sauce, fondue potatoes, stem broccoli with… I can never say the name of them,’ he said. ‘Those little fish.’ Handkerchiefs?’

‘Ankercheovees,’ Bez attempted again. ‘Anchovies?’

He went onto add that he also had a chilli sauce to make.

Gregg seemed impressed by Bez’s hearty meal. ‘Hogget and mushroom we rarely see,’ he pointed out, before going on to explain what hogget is.

‘We get a lamb, it grows up, it becomes a hogget,’ he said. ‘It gets to a full sheep, it’s mutton.’

The judges were impressed by Bez’s culinary skills and forked out the compliments.

‘Your potato fondants are really soft, and they’re beautifully flavoured with rosemary,’ Gregg enthused. ‘I’m happy with the flesh on the mutton. I like your mint sauce, I really do.

‘I like the anchovies on the broccoli, with a bit of chilli. I love what it is you’re attempting; I just think a little too ambitious for 60 minutes.’

Celebrity MasterChef continues on Tuesday night with the four remaining contestants battling it out for a spot in the quarter finals.

Celebrity MasterChef continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
