An executive producer for Marvel’s new Disney Plus series What If…? has shared how ‘bummed’ he was when a ‘particularly good’ episode had to be cut from season 1… but it’s not the end of the road for the missing instalment.
What If…?, based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name, asks what could have happened if certain moments in the MCU had played out differently.
From Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter becoming super soldier Captain Carter to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa growing up to become Star-Lord, the show is jampacked full of exciting and experimental storylines.
However, the creators had to resign themselves to the fact that not every idea on the drawing board would make the final cut, executive producer Brad Winderbaum explained during a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk.
Brad outlined how ‘most What If…? scenarios had to be cut’, saying that even if they were to ‘greenlight thousands of seasons’, they wouldn’t have been able to make them all.
There was one episode in particular that Brad was disappointed to see go – but fortunately, it will be showing up in season two.

‘There is an episode in season one that had to get kicked to season two because of Covid,’ he said.
‘It’s a particularly good episode. I’m bummed we’re going to have to wait another year. It’s fantastic and so much fun. But, I’m glad that people are going to be able to see it.’
After What If…?, the MCU will explore animated shows further, with Brad stating that the studio is ‘looking at them very much like we look at any of our projects, any of our live-action projects, which is they really have to justify their own existence on their own terms’.
He explained that just like with any production in the MCU, it’s important to figure out the purpose of the show so that ‘new terrain’ can be covered.

‘Why are we making this show, what is the new terrain that’s we’re going to be exploring, what is the unexpected story it’s going to tell? But as you can imagine there’s lots of great opportunities there. We are going to create some more hopefully surprising shows,’ he said.
What If…? sees numerous actors from the MCU reprise their roles, including Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Karen Gillan as Nebula, to name a few.
However, some fan-favourite characters have been voiced by different actors, meaning that stars including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Brie Larson and Scarlett Johansson are not a part of the series.

What If…? will consist of nine episodes, with it being ‘no coincidence’ that it’s launching after the release of Loki.
The season finale of Loki saw the timeline branch in multiple different directions, prompting fan speculation over the mayhem that has been caused across the multiverse.
What If…? premieres on Wednesday August 11 on Disney Plus.
