The writer of Marvel’s new Disney Plus series What If…? has teased big things for Captain Carter in future, offering hope to fans desperate to see more of Hayley Atwell in the MCU.
What If…?, which is based on the comic book series of the same name, explores what would have happened if certain events in the MCU had panned out differently.
Episode 1, the release date for which has now arrived, imagines if Peggy Carter (Hayley) had been the person injected with the super-soldier serum rather than Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton), thus becoming the superpowered and legendary Captain Carter.
During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, What If…? creator AC Bradley and director Bryan Andrews gushed over Hayley’s talent, hinting at the significance of Captain Carter’s role in the series.
When asked whether the episodes of the series will interweave as time goes on, AC responded in a cryptic manner by stating: ‘In Marvel, everything is connected.’
‘You never know. We did, I will say, fall in love more and more with Captain Carter as we were going through that pilot,’ the writer said.

AC explained that Captain Carter was an ‘unusual’ character to explore in the show, as with an anthology series, one would usually ‘find who is the human being behind the shield’.
‘Peggy Carter was different, because while we all know she’s a superhero, she hasn’t been portrayed as a superpowered character yet,’ she said.
‘So in a way she became our own hero, our own creation, and then voiced by the insanely talented Hayley Atwell, she became real to us in a way. So I hope that we get to see Peggy Carter again.’
AC shared her wish that Marvel Studios will provide her with the opportunity to pen more adventures for Captain Carter.
‘This is also my subtle way of telling Marvel let me write more Captain Carter. Because I’m in love, I’m in love and I’ll follow Hayley Atwell wherever she goes. I’ll follow her into a war. I will die quickly, but I’d follow her to war,’ she stated.

Looking back on when they had to whittle down the ideas for ‘what if’ scenarios, AC said that the team ‘had an embarrassment of riches’ as they ‘had so many to choose from’.
The screenwriter’s original idea for the show would have seen it go down an extremely different, more ‘angsty’ path, she revealed.
‘When I pitched for the job, I originally pitched a big angsty action adventure romance that survived many stages but then died on the vine, which happens,’ she said.
‘But to this day, I’m like someone just give me my space odyssey action romance. So maybe in season two we get it. But I’m a woman who loves characters fighting for their relationship against all odds.

Bryan, who described Hayley and her performance as ‘so incredible’, added that when making a show, it’s ‘pretty cool when everything comes together’, from the voice talent to the look, the lighting and the score.
Following Captain Carter’s epic debut, many fans are undoubtedly hoping to see Peggy stretch her wings even further in the MCU.
Episode 1 of What If…? is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
