Good Morning Britain staff desperate for Piers Morgan return as ratings fall and ‘morale is on the floor’: ‘It’s not beyond the realms’

Piers Morgan’s sensational Good Morning Britain exit has still left its mark with staff desperate for his return, according to reports. 

The 56-year-old famously stormed off set after a row with Alex Beresford and sparking a record number of complaints over his remarks dismissing Meghan Markle’s mental health battle, just hours before confirming that very episode would be his last. 

Since then ratings have continued to drop from the record-breaking number of viewers who tuned in to watch his swan song, with his final instalment beating BBC Breakfast for the very first time. 

Even five months later, morale is said to be ‘on the floor’ among the GMB staff. 

‘Everyone on the show would absolutely love to see Piers come back because, in many ways, they feel that’s the only way the ratings dive can be reversed,’ an insider told MailOnline. 

‘It’s not beyond the realms because he still talks to Susanna and despite everything that happens he is still in touch with many who worked on the programme.’

Following his exit, Piers’ ‘TV wife’ Susanna Reid has been joined by a number of guest presenters, including Richard Madeley, Richard Bacon and Alastair Campbell after ITV boss Kevin Lygo hailed the former Britain’s Got Talent judge as ‘irreplaceable’. 

Piers has also fuelled rumours he could make a return to the ITV breakfast show.

Appearing on Fox news, he told Sean Hannity: ‘I have had some quite random third-party feelers put out to see if I would consider a return to the show.

‘I don’t want to say on the record who, but a pretty close third-party . . . 

‘As the Americans say, they reached out — there have been approaches to test the water in the wake of their obvious ratings issues.

‘It makes me sad to see all the hard work we did to beat the BBC in viewing numbers evaporate so fast. It’s their problem to work out . . . but never say never.’
