The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang has hinted at how Maggie and Negan’s relationship is going to progress when season 11 drops on Star on Disney Plus, with the enemies going through plenty of ‘ups and downs’.
At the end of season 10 of the post-apocalyptic series, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) was horrified to discover that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a fan-favourite villain of the show, was walking free in Alexandria, after he previously killed her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun).
While some TWD fans may think that there’s a possibility for Negan to achieve redemption and build bonds with people who he would have previously been at odds with, it seems unlikely that Maggie would ever be willing to let his past atrocious acts slide.
During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, writer Angela, who has worked on The Walking Dead since season two, opened up about how Maggie and Negan will co-exist in season 11, now that they are technically working on the same side.
Angela explained that their interactions at the start of the season are ‘truly just the beginning’, emphasising how little trust is shared between the pair.
‘These two, they don’t have a lot of trust in each other and yet they have to work together, she said.

‘We got really interested in these ideas of can you have redemption? Can there be forgiveness when you start off in this way? Can people who hate each other and don’t trust each other and are enemies, can they figure out a productive way to work together? Is it always destined to fail?’
The executive producer stated that ‘there will be a lot of ups and downs within that over time’, adding: ‘It’s just one of the more interesting pairings that we’ve gotten to write for, so we’re excited to share all that with the audience.’
Another key relationship that TWD fans are keen to see more of is the longstanding friendship between Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride), which stems all the way to the start of the show.

While the pair – who are set to star in their own spin-off series – have experienced a rough patch, Angela emphasised that they are ‘best friends’.
‘Truly in the way that best friends really can be, where they sometimes are going to have hard conversations with each other, so we saw that in season 10, but I think when we come into season 11, we’ll see that they still kind of have each other’s backs, but they’ve got some of their own journeys and things to go through, to work through, before they can come back together again,’ she said.
‘Without giving too much away, we like to do stories sometimes with the two of them as their own leads in their own thing. Other times they’re crossing and working very closely together. We’re going to have a variety of things like that for Daryl and Carol, they’re both so strong, but yeah. Lots to come for both of them in the season.’

Despite the theories that past characters could return in season 11 or have cameos, such as former series lead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Angela was understandably unable to comment on the speculation.
Nonetheless, given this is the final season of The Walking Dead, marking over a decade since it first premiered, we have no doubt the upcoming episodes are going to be full of surprises.
The Walking Dead season 11 premieres on Monday August 23 on Star on Disney Plus.
