Warning: spoilers ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 episode 10.
The Handmaid’s Tale star Madeline Brewer has expressed her hope that her character Janine joins forces with Esther (McKenna Grace) in season 5 to ‘f**k s**t up’ in Gilead – and we can’t wait to see it.
In the season 4 episode 10 finale of the dystopian series, Janine takes Esther under her wing after the teenager is made a handmaid.
While speaking to Metro.co.uk, Madeline explained that she found Janine and Esther’s growing connection ‘really beautiful’, because Janine ‘relates to her and sees that their fire is the same’.
When Esther is first captured by the authorities in Gilead, she initially refuses to cooperate with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), going on hunger strike amid plans for her to become a handmaid.
However, Janine makes her realise that ‘it’s going to get really difficult’ if Esther doesn’t ‘fall in line’, considering Janine ended up having her eye removed near the beginning of the series when she tried to rebel.

‘I think she sees that and is like, if I can save this girl from getting her eye taken out or her tongue cut out of her mouth, let me save her from that fate,’ Madeline said.
Madeline compared Janine’s relationship with Esther to Janine’s connection with June (Elisabeth Moss), when Janine is trying to help Esther understand the punishments that she could face.
‘I think initially it’s just, “I know what can happen to you.” And then I think she realises, “You really don’t understand, and you might need someone to guide you through this at first,” just like Janine did. Janine needed June. Janine becomes the June to Esther’s Janine a little bit, which is a really cool experience for me,’ she said.
The actor stressed that Janine ‘idolised June for so long and now sees herself filling that role’, which was a ‘really powerful moment’ for her, especially as June has now escaped to Canada.
So what could lie in store for Janine and Esther now that they’ve been made handmaids together in Gilead?

‘I personally hope that they’re ready to, excuse my French, but I hope they’re ready to f**k s**t up,’ Madeline stated.
‘I really would love to see a world in which Janine can keep Esther safe while simultaneously, I would love to see them use their position and break it down from the inside out.’
We are ready for Janine and Esther to take Gilead by storm!
At the end of the season four finale, June arranges for Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) to be dropped off in No Man’s Land, where he’s chased to his death by a crowd of former handmaids.

When June arrives back home, her husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) catches sight of her cradling baby Nichole with blood on her face.
He sinks to the ground as he watches her, with O-T telling Metro.co.uk that the moment was ‘an inflection point’ for Luke, as while ‘it may be unclear what exactly June has done, it’s clear that Luke no longer recognises the person who she’s become’.
The Handmaid’s Tale is available to watch on All 4.
