The Walking Dead finally returned for its final season last night, with the 11th instalment of the hit zombie drama arriving on our screens in emphatic fashion – and viewers could not contain themselves after a shock cliffhanger.

Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) found themselves at the centre of a dramatic storyline, with Negan leaving her for dead at the mercy of hordes of walkers.

The pair have an interesting past to say the least. At the end of season 10 of the post-apocalyptic series, Maggie was horrified to discover that Negan, a fan-favourite villain of the show, was walking free in Alexandria, after he previously killed her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun).

Tensions between them came to a head during Sunday’s episode.

In the season 11 premiere, they were involved in a dangerous food-finding mission, which ended with Maggie being pulled off a train into a pit of zombies.

The episode, titled Acheron: Part 1, saw them join the likes of Daryl Dixon [Norman Reedus] for a raid on the military base Fort Collins in search of supplies.

Carol Peletier [Melissa McBride] and Rosita Espinosa [Christian Serratos] were also on the mission, and successfully found a supply of canned food after tiptoeing over a group of sleeping walkers in tense scenes.

After packing the goods into their bags, they attached them to wires so that Jerry [Cooper Adams] could pull them to safety.

Daryl was also on the roof, and cut his arm. The wound caused a drop of blood to fall onto the ground, landing into the eye of one of the sleeping zombies and causing them to wake up.

The group fought back against the onrushing walkers, with Maggie and Carol shooting to hold them off. Thankfully, they managed to make their escape, with Daryl lifting them out on the wires away from danger.

Despite the successful mission, the group only managed to find enough food for one week. Maggie informed them that she knew another place where they could find supplies.

‘The place I lived before this. Where we lived. Meridian. It’s got plenty of food, water, crops and animals,’ she said.

Negan threatened to leave the group behind if they went through with the plan, but soon they were heading off down an ominous metro tunnel before being confronted with body bags full of zombies.

Later in the episode, the group were attacked by hundreds of onrushing walkers and they were soon surrounded.

The episode ended with Maggie hanging precariously from the car, with walkers all around her. Negan watched her and did nothing, leaving her screaming for help before being pulled down by the walkers.

Fans could not contain themselves after the cliffhanger ending, with social media users speculating about her fate – and damning Negan for his inaction.

There were also some fans who claimed she couldn’t really be dead, despite being dragged down by the zombie hordes.

‘There’s no way they just killed Maggie off right??? If there’s one thing I’ve learned while watching this show, it’s that unless you SEE the person die they didn’t really die. I can’t believe Negan did that though…Here’s to the last season…’ one wrote.

Could she really have met her end on the show? Viewers will have to tune in to the rest of season 11 to find out.
