John Cena confirms WWE exit in emotional post after losing to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam

Goodbye for now, John (Picture: WWE)

John Cena has revealed his brief WWE comeback is over and he’s heading back to Hollywood.

The 16-time world champion put on a fantastic show with on-screen rival Roman Reigns as they battled over the Undisputed Title at SummerSlam over the weekend, with the Tribal Chief picking up a big win over the legendary star.

Now, Cena has addressed his immediate future and thank fans as he revealed other work commitments mean he’ll be gone again for a little while.

He tweeted: ‘Words cannot describe how appreciative I am that the @WWEUniverse allowed me the opportunity to return and perform. Thank you staff, superstars, and most of all FANS for giving me an unforgettable summer at “home” with my “family.” ‘

And while Cena admitted he’ll be disappearing now, he suggested he’s certainly not closing the book on his WWE career just yet.

‘The journey takes me away now,’ he added, ‘But I’ll C U soon. (sic)’

Fans had been delighted to see the champ back on a grand stage, and seeing him reignite his feud with a very different Roman was a dream for many.

They certainly delivered on the high expectations, with fans at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas – and those watching at home – getting caught up in the drama and believing Cena might actually win the gold.

In the end, he fell short as the Head of the Table built more momentum only to have Brock Lesnar return as the champ was celebrating, with the Beast Incarnate setting his sights on Reigns and the gold.

There’s the added wrinkle of Paul Heyman switching sides during Lesnar’s long absence, which should make for a compelling story over the coming months.

Beyond that, there are still plenty of rumours and reports suggesting Cena’s fellow wrestling-turned-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson could also make a huge comeback.

All signs are pointing to Dwayne facing his cousin Roman at WrestleMania 38 next year, and fans will be desperately hoping it all works out.
