Bianca Andreescu to Crash Out of WTA Top-10 Rankings After US Open 2021 Loss

The No.6 seed Bianca Andreescu crashed out of the 2021 US Open after a grueling fourth-round match. Despite winning the opening set, Andreescu lost to Maria Sakkari 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, with the terrific battle lasting three hours and 30 minutes.

The captivating match kept the New York crowd at the edge of their seats and finished at 2:13 am, breaking the previous record of the match between Madison Keys and Alison Riske in 2016, which finished at 1:46 am.

Bianca Andreescu drops out of the Top-10 ranking

After suffering a tough fourth-round defeat, Andreescu would drop out of the Top-10 WTA rankings. Currently ranked World No.7, the Canadian would drop thirteen places to World No.20 when the rankings come out next week.

Andreescu entered the Top-10 rankings after clinching her first-ever Grand Slam at the 2019 US Open. Since then, she has remained within the Top-10 rankings, which marks a two-year period.

However, when the updated rankings come out next week, Andreescu would drop outside the Top-10 for the first time since September 8, 2019.

During the first week, Andreescu defeated Viktorija Golubic, Lauren Davis, and Greet Minnen in the first three rounds, respectively. In fact, her fourth-round loss to Sakkari marked her first-ever defeat at the US Open since her debut in 2019 (last year she didn’t compete because of injury).

The last eighteen months have been hard for Andreescu, she had to battle COVID-19 issues, injuries, split with coach Sylvain Bruneau.

Last month, Andreescu started training with a new coach Sven Groeneveld, whose previous clients include Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Tommy Haas, and Maria Sharapova.

As for Sakkari, she has entered the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time in her career. Up next, the Greek faces the No.4 seed, Karolina Pliskova, for a place in the semifinals of the tournament.

With many past US Open champions already ousted, there would be new U.S. Open women’s champion this year.
