Dustin Johnson What’s in the Bag 2021: Driver, Irons, Wedges, and Putter

On the course, Dustin Johnson is a force to reckon with. The two-time major champion is one of the fittest golfers on the Tour and is currently preparing for the Ryder Cup 2021 after a fantastic 2020. Having said that, let’s take a look at Johnson’s bag, and what driver, irons, wedges, and putter he is using in 2021.

Johnson’s powerful swing is a result of skill and precision, his golfs clubs factoring in as crucial equipment. While he last used an Itsy Bitsy Spider TaylorMade putter, there are some other brands Johnson has used in the past. He also tried out a variety of drivers.

What putter does Dustin Johnson use?

According to reports, Johnson uses a limited edition TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider putter (35.75 inches, 2.5° loft). This particular putter seems to be a favourite for Johnson, who has had it in his bag for 11 of his 22 PGA Tour wins. The 37-year-old has installed a Superstroke pistol grip to the putter. It helps him distribute grip pressure more evenly. Now, while this particular putter appears to be more compact than the original, it is known to be extremely stable.

“I’ll tinker a little, but I don’t really like to change putters. I might put mine in a time out for a couple of rounds, but I’ve putted with the same black Spider for the past five or six years,” Johnson said, adding that it works well with his stroke.

Johnson apparently also has the TaylorMade TP Juno putter, which includes an Anser-style blade. This too has been fitted with the above-mentioned Superstroke grip.

Reporter: “What putter are you using this week?”

Dustin Johnson: “A TaylorMade.”

Reporter: “I understand that. Which one?”

Dustin Johnson: “I honestly don’t know the name.”

What wedges does Johnson use?

Johnson uses the TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 (54°, 60°) wedges, an important set of equipment in his bag. While they are not the latest wedges by TaylorMade, they do have the same milling process, which grants Johnson consistency on his “sole grinds and sharp grooves for spin and control”. The Columbia-native has admitted that he changes his 60-degree every few tournaments, his soles milled so they stay consistent throughout. “I can switch in the middle of a tournament, and it doesn’t bother me”.

Irons Dustin Johnson uses

Johnson uses the TaylorMade P730 (3-PW) irons, which have True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, soft stepped, and Golf Pride Tour Velvet 58R grips. The 2020 Masters champion has a full set in his bag, made of traditional forged blades. Johnson stated that he likes the workability of the blades, adding that a cavity-back is harder to move. “I tend to hit them low and to the right because the blade length is longer, and that throws my release off. I hit my blade irons higher and straighter”.

Which Fairway Woods does Dustin Johnson have in his bag?

Johnson uses the TaylorMade SIM Max 16° with a Project X HZRDUS Black 95 shaft; and the TaylorMade SIM Max 20° with a Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black 100 shaft. “My 3-wood and 7-wood each go a specific distance. I want my 3-wood to consistently go in that 285-yard range,” Johnson said.  “The 7-wood gives me a little more ammunition to bring one in high and soft on the greens from about 260 yards out”.

What driver does Dustin Johnson use?

Johnson uses the TaylorMade SIM2 10.5° which is 45.75 inches with a Fujikura Ventus Black proto 6X shaft. This driver promises perfect distance, its head shape providing speed. The shaft is also known for stability and speed both, and has been popular on the Tour since 1998. He used the new driver during the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
The 24-time PGA Tour winner explained that he does switch drivers for a change in pace, but the SIM2 is his new gamer. “It takes me time to make a change because I like to see a lot of loft, but the head needs to sit square. If I don’t see enough loft, I instinctively hang back to try and get the ball up in the air”.

Johnson also uses the  TaylorMade TP5x golf ball. Designed to take high swing speeds, the ball perfectly complements Johnson’s game. “I like the new TaylorMade TP5x and how it feels coming off the putter”. He further explained that he starts testing the greens, before moving towards longer clubs to check spin rates.
