Do Ryder Cup Players Receive Prize Money for Winning the Tournament?

The Ryder Cup is an event where players represent their countries and continents. However, it has never been an event where players play to earn a paycheck as they do on regular Tour games. Moreover, for decades, there wasn’t much money or profits for organizing Ryder Cup. It was all about competitiveness and patriotism.

But once the television rights came in the late 1970s, it became possible for the organizations to make money. But does it mean that players receive money for playing this event? Moreover, how do the organizers split the profits which they make during the Ryder Cup? Let us find out.

Meanwhile, there has never been traditional prize money associated with the Ryder Cup. But players have received some form of compensation since its origin in the 1920s. However, with television rights coming in, it gave a boost to the profit margins. Hence, when the Ryder Cup takes place in the United States, the PGA of America owns the rights to the products.

But they also split profits with the European Tour. The PGA of America takes the profits at a 5:1 ratio when the United States is the host. Moreover, when the Europeans host the event, the European Tour claims about 60% of the profits.

However, golfers who play in the U.S. Ryder Cup team do not earn prize money at this event as they do at other tournaments. The PGA of America splits profits with the players, with $200,000 reportedly given to the charity in each American player’s name. They evenly split that money between educational charities and charities of a player’s choosing.

Meanwhile, Team Europe’s Ryder Cup players receive no prize money. But traditionally, they receive gifts from their captains that are paid for from the Ryder Cup pool. Tony Jacklin, one of the European captains, had started this tradition, and it has continued ever since.
