Matt Hancock was rudely interrupted during his tense interview with Piers Morgan thanks to an impromptu ‘software update’ which pretty much summed up our virtual pandemic problems.

The Health Secretary appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to answer Piers and Susanna Reid’s burning questions about the PPE shortage scandal.

Mr Hancock argued: ‘I think we should be on this programme thanking my team because they work so hard.’

His sentiment only riled Piers further as he hit back: ‘If you want to play that game here, you and your team have presided over a woeful handling of this pandemic that has led to us having the worst death toll in Europe.

‘130,000 people dead, so I’m sorry if my first thought when you come on, Health Secretary, is not to thank you and your team for your brilliant handling of the pandemic because I don’t think 130,000 deaths shows that you’ve handled it well.

‘I’m sorry I’m not thanking you and applauding you.’

Mr Hancock then laughed while claiming he was ‘exasperated’ at Piers ‘cutting him off’ whenever he answered.

The Government minister then refused to apologise despite being found guilty of unlawfully failing to publish details of billions of pounds’ worth of coronavirus-related contracts.

As Piers continued to badger Mr Hancock into an apology, the minister’s face was suddenly covered by a pop-up screen with the ITV logo which required a ‘software update’.

Susanna initially looked startled before squinting closely at the screen and seemingly trying to hold back a smile as the update refused to budge. However, she and Piers managed to avoid commenting on the blunder like true professionals.

Instead, it was left to viewers to entertain themselves laughing at the awkward moment.

One reacted: ‘Confirmation of what many have always said. Matt Hancock is indeed ,a robot. Software update needed.’

‘Matt Hancock is broken. Software update required,’ another quipped.

‘I thought Matt Hancock had to be an AI charachter as no-one could have so blatantly twisted the truth during questioning. The proof came mid interview when he started a software upgrade,’ one other viewer joked.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
