“Don’t Think We Are Going to See Him in Australia”: Tennis Great Sparks Concern Over Roger Federer’s Return

Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer has been inconsistent over the past couple of seasons. Ever since he lost in the Australian Open 2020 semifinal, he has barely played much tennis. Significantly, a lot has got to do with his age and fitness. 

After undergoing two knee surgeries during the previous season, Roger Federer made a return this year but could only compete in two of the four Grand Slam events. He appeared at the French Open but could not complete his outing due to lack of match fitness. At the Wimbledon Championships, he was bageled out in the quarterfinals, which undoubtedly came as a shock to many. 

Former doubles legend has low hopes from Roger Federer

Recently, former doubles legend Todd Woodbridge spoke on the prospect of seeing the Swiss maestro enjoy Grand Slam success once again. The multi-doubles Grand Slam winner was doubtful of seeing the 20-time champion win a Major at the age of 40, having undergone several knee surgeries in the recent past. 

Speaking on this subject, Woodbridge stated, “Highly unlikely. If he were to win one, I think the only one that he would be able to get through is Wimbledon. He’s had another knee surgery … he’s not going to be out on the court for a while. I don’t think we’re going to see him in Australia (in 2022).”

The former Australian player was not sure if we would see Federer appear in Melbourne next year. It would not be fitting to consider Roger going all the way and winning the French Open either. His best chance is at the Wimbledon Championships, but winning seven matches in a row seems unlikely. 

The 50-year-old further added, “He’s not going to win at the French Open, and he’s 40 years of age. I think Roger’s going to come out and play some nice matches, but winning seven matches to win a slam, I don’t think we’re going to see that.”

Post the Wimbledon Championships this year, Federer has not stepped on a tennis court. He announced the need to undergo another knee surgery, ruling himself out for the remainder of the 2021 season. We hope to see him back on the courts and return to winning ways.
