Every Star Wars game in development: from Fallen Order 2 to KOTOR Remake

You don’t need the Force to sense these upcoming Star Wars games (pic: EA)

With the Star Wars license open to other developers besides EA, fans of the series won’t be going hungry when it comes to new games.

We are arguably on the cusp of a whole new era of Star Wars video games. After years of EA exclusively the revival of LucasArts as Lucasfilm Games means that theoretically any company can now make a Star Wars game.

It’s still early days though and it certainly doesn’t mean EA can’t or won’t be making Star Wars games of its own. But the possibilities are perhaps greater than they’ve ever been.

There are a number of projects already confirmed to be in development, so here’s a handy compilation of what we already know, plus some interesting rumours.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2

It’s a matter of when, not if (pic: EA)

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. Technically speaking, EA and Respawn haven’t announced a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the hit single-player action game from 2019, but it’s basically guaranteed to happen.

Aside from being a critical and commercial success, a Kotaku report published in February 2020 said that a sequel had already been greenlit. Plus, EA itself has strongly hinted that it is making a sequel.

Other EA Star Wars games

Even if Fallen Order 2 isn’t happening (which it is), after the Lucasfilm Games announcement EA was quick to confirm that it is working on multiple Star Wars projects. As for what these projects could be, there are a couple of educated guesses.

The first is another Star Wars: Battlefront game. While Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was mired by its loot box controversy, it eventually became a game worth playing once its DLC was finished. With EA supposedly considering making the FIFA series free-to-play in the future, perhaps it could do the same thing with Battlefront 3 if it intends to keep pushing loot boxes.

It was once speculated that EA Motive, the studio behind Star Wars: Squadrons, was working on a new Star Wars game, but it’s since denied this. Currently, the studio is busy with the Dead Space remake but it’s possible it’ll return to Star Wars afterwards.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

It’s still coming, don’t worry (pic: Traveller’s Tales)

You’d be forgiven for thinking this had already come out, but Traveller’s Tales’ next Lego game has suffered delay after delay since its 2019 announcement. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will do precisely what the name suggests and cover all nine mainline Star Wars movies.

All but two of them have received Lego game adaptations in the past, but Traveller’s Tales has promised entirely new levels for episodes I through VII, while The Last Jedi and The Rise Of Skywalker will finally get the Lego treatment. Currently, it’s scheduled to release in early 2022, so hopefully Kylo Ren doesn’t throw a temper tantrum and force another delay.

Ubisoft Massive project

The first thing Lucasfilm Games announced on its return was a partnership with Ubisoft, with Massive Entertainment, developer of The Division, helming an original Star Wars game.

So far, the only official details shared about it are that it will feature an open world and be story-driven, which suggests that it won’t be a live service title like The Division games. Although job ads may point to it bearing some similarities in terms of the combat and player progression.

It’s also speculated that it will centre around bounty hunters and the Star Wars underworld, which would make sense considering the popularity of the Mandalorian TV show, with fan favourite Boba Fett’s own show airing on Disney+ in December.

Don’t expect any actual info on this project for a while. Ubisoft described it as being in early development back in February and refused to provide even a release window. At best, it probably won’t release until 2023, especially since Massive is also making Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora, which is scheduled for 2022.

Star Wars: Hunters

Not to be mean, but this is probably the least interesting Star Wars game of the bunch. Announced earlier this year, Star Wars: Hunters is the franchise’s take on competitive arena games, pitting a cast of diverse and wholly original characters in team-based real-time combat by… the people that make FarmVille.

It will release for mobile devices and Nintendo Switch in early 2022 and will be free-to-play, so there’s no harm in checking it out if you’re interested.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

That short teaser was all fans needed to get excited (pic: Luacasfilm Games)

At Sony’s last PlayStation showcase, the first thing it announced was a full-fledged remake of beloved sci-fi BioWare role-playing game Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic.

Aside from the incredibly brief reveal trailer, all that’s known is that it is being handled by Aspyr and is in development for PlayStation 5 and PC. It will only be a timed console exclusive though, so Xbox Series X/S owners don’t need to worry about being left out.

A Nintendo Switch version seems extremely unlikely, but a port of the original game was announced recently and will release on November 11. It’s also rumoured that a third game is in development, but not from EA or BioWare.

Bring Home the Bounty teaser

Earlier this week, the official Star Wars website announced a Bring Home the Bounty Campaign, which will announce a variety of new Star Wars products every week until the end of the year.

The announcement may contain some hints as to what these products are, with each week being represented with a unique symbol, like a Stormtrooper helmet or a pair of lightsabers.

Week 10’s symbol is what looks like a game controller, suggesting that some kind of game project will be announced on December 14. While it could be something brand new, it’s admittedly just as likely that it’ll be an announcement related to one of the already confirmed games.

The Quantic Dream Star Wars rumour

Last month, there was a rumour that Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, is working with the Star Wars license. The rumour picked up traction when insider Tom Henderson highlighted it and added that it has been in development for 18 months.

There’s still nothing official about this one, but Quantic Dream is a good fit for Star Wars. As it has demonstrated with its previous games, it has experience creating graphically impressive, story-driven adventures with horrendous dialogue… so they’d be perfect for a prequel era game.

Many of these projects, and perhaps others so far unguessed at, are likely to be features at the next Star Wars Celebration event, which will be taking place in May 2022.
