Who Is Mikey Garcia’s Trainer, Robert Garcia?

Robert Garcia is one of the few men to have passed his legendary skills to the newer generation after retiring himself from professional boxing. Once a world champion, ‘Grandpa’ Garcia has honed several others to become a world titlist, whom we see in today’s time.

Multi-division titleholder Mikey Garcia is one of them. The California native has been under Robert Garcia’s umbrella for several years. And have constantly benefitted to become a champion at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy. Well, Mikey Garcia isn’t the only one. The list of Grandpa’s pupils reflects umpteen A-listers, and Mikey Garcia is just one of the many highlights.

46-year-old Garcia is widely regarded as one of the best trainers in the world. He had signed a deal with MTK Global to hone pugilists under the banner. That said, some of his notable pupils are- Nonito Donaire, Marcos Maidana, Victor Ortiz, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Christopher Algieri amongst others. So, Robert Garcia is not new to honing world champions.

A lot of today’s generation see Robert Garcia as the chief trainer to Mikey Garcia, a multi-division elite titlist. But ‘Grandpa’ has his self-identity in the sport of boxing. Apart from being a trainer and a regular face to the media, here’s a look back to when ‘Grandpa’ saw sheer success by lacing up the gloves.

Robert Garcia’s Boxing Career

In an almost two-decade-long career, Robert Garcia secured himself a record of 34-3 and a world title in the IBF super featherweight strap. Being flawless for most of his career, Garcia’s all three defeats came in the last two years of his pro-ride. He lost his belt to Diego Corrales in 1999 via TKO.

The maiden defeat paved the road to another loss against Ben Tackie in 2000, again via stoppage. While ‘Grandpa’ resurrected himself with a win over Sandro Marcos in the same year, he lost to Joel Casamayor via stoppage in 2001. Moving on with a win against John Trigg eight months later, Robert Garcia hung his gloves. It was the beginning of another journey.

While most boxers lose their spark after retirement, Robert Garcia found a new one. His career as a coach fetched him the Trainer of the Year Award by Ring Magazine in 2011. It was a massive achievement as Garcia was both- a reputed world champion and trainer by then. Thus, his life has revolved around the spirits of boxing all over. And looks to remain the same ahead.
