“The UFC Gave Him No Choice”- Colby Covington Says UFC Threatened to Strip Kamaru Usman if He Didn’t Agree to Fight

Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman are perhaps the most evenly matched fighters in the UFC’s welterweight division at the moment. The two men went toe-to-toe in an epic title fight at UFC 245 in December 2019. Dana White has stated on multiple occasions that it was one of the best fights he had ever seen. And in a few weeks from today, ‘Chaos’ and ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ will be able to run it back once again.

Ahead of his upcoming fight, ‘Chaos’ mentioned how hard it was to finalize the fight in a sit-down interview with Brett Okamoto. He said, “Man, it’s been such a journey. It’s been tough Brett, it was not supposed to happen. They did not want this to happen,  they were refusing, they were trying to find every way in the book to get out of fighting this rematch. They did not want this fight man.”

Chaos’ continued, “And the only reason they have to take it is because the UFC gave him no choice. They said, hey you fight this fight, or we strip you. It is one or the other, you gotta come out and prove you’re the best in the world. There needs to be no controversy surrounding this fight. So it’s been tough.”

Colby Covington vs Kamau Usman 2 has all the makings of a fight for the ages

If the first fight is anything to go by, the rematch will most definitely be in contention for fight of the year. Colby Covington is without a doubt the toughest test for Kamaru Usman in the welterweight division. It is something that the champion himself had admitted multiple times.

Usman was able to secure a finish in the dying minutes of the last round the first time the two men faced each other. This time around, a lot has changed, including coaches for both fighters. Usman is now under the tutelage of Trevor Wittman, whereas Covington is under the able guidance of Daniel Valverde and Cesar Carneiro at MMA Masters in Florida.

Who do you think takes the win this time around? Let us know in the comments below!
