Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood apologised to Jurgen after admitting that they had decided to ‘Anglicise’ a challenge on this week’s show, despite it being ‘German week’.

The fifth episode in this year’s series saw the GBBO contestants embracing treats from Germany, as they whipped up some impressive bakes.

In the showstopper round, they were tasked with making a three-tier cake made with yeast.

However, budding German baker Jurgen was baffled by the challenge, remarking that it isn’t something that he would normally see at home.

When judges Paul and Prue Leith, and host Noel Fielding, approached his bench to see how he was getting on, the IT specialist informed them:  ‘So, in Germany we wouldn’t do a tiered yeasted cake…’

‘No, we’ve anglicised it, which I apologise for,’ Paul laughed.

‘It’s like being asked to make a three-tier apple crumble or a three-tier trifle,’ Jurgen added.

Despite the confusion, he packed his yeasted cake with chocolate raisins and apricot jam, and flavoured ‘with a healthy dose of Bavarian booze’.

Unfortunately, his boozy final bake wasn’t quite enough to truly impress Paul – who had previously offered him a coveted handshake earlier in the episode.

Instead, Giuseppe beat out stiff competition from his fellow Channel 4 co-star to be named Star Baker.

Matt Lucas – alone without Noel Fielding who was ill during filming – announced that Freya had been eliminates.

‘Genuinely, I think it’s the best experience of my life,’ the teenager said as her castmates were left in tears over the decision.

‘I do feel really proud to have even just been able to keep up.’

Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
