Spy Kids star Alexa PenaVega has been forced to defend her parenting after her two-year-old son lost his fingertip in an accident at home.

The 33-year-old actress revealed the family had a ‘rough Friday night’ after she accidentally shut son Kingston’s fingers in a bathroom door while getting the children ready for bed.

‘His first finger is bruised and a little bloody… but his middle finger took the brunt of it and was severed from the first knuckle near the tip,’ she told her Instagram followers.

The incident has led to Alexa receiving criticism over her parenting skills, prompting her to deny it was intentional.

She explained on Wednesday: ‘Social media can be really frustrating. But after seeing the comments about people questioning my parenting and assuming I slammed a door in a fit of rage… absolutely not.

‘I simply closed the door. That is literally what happened. I know I will never be able to please everyone and people will be ugly to be ugly… and for those people all I can do is pray for them.’

Hours before, Alexa shared an update on Kingston’s recovery and revealed that he is fortunately doing well.

‘I wanted to make you a video to show you that little man is doing great. We’re all closer than ever and we’re so thankful for your friends,’ she said in a short clip.

Proving that he’s on the mend, Kingston excitedly ran into shot and showed off the chewing gum he was eating, while wearing a yellow bandage on one arm.

Alexa had earlier credited her husband, Carlos PenaVega, for swooping in ‘like Superman to take care of our family’.

She explained: ‘It took a minute for all of us to process what happened. If anything it made us all love each other even more and humbled us completely. Thankfully, Kingston is already doing flips like nothing happened. Gosh I love my babies!’

However, she revealed that doctors were unable to reattach the piece of Kingston’s finger that is missing.

‘Poor baby. But the other 9 are so cute! He’ll be more than fine,’ she said optimistically.

Alexa is best known for starring in the Spy Kids movie franchise as Carmen Cortez. She has been married to husband Carlos for seven years and they also share son Ocean, four, and daughter Rio, five months.
