Superman colourist quits DC Comics and accuses them of ‘ruining characters’

A colourist working for DC Comics has claimed he has quit his job due to changes made to characters, in the same week that Superman’s son was revealed to be bisexual.

Gabe Eltaeb lashed out at what he perceived to be ‘f***ing nonsense’ at the comics company, specifically changing Superman’s slogan to no longer include ‘the American way’.

Eltaeb was speaking on a YouTube live stream with fellow former DC Comics worker Ethan Van Sciver, when he said: ‘I’m finishing out my contract with DC. I’m tired of this s***.

‘I’m tired of them ruining these characters; they don’t have a right to do this.’

He then specifically hit out at Superman’s new slogan, which has been changed from ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’ to ‘Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow’/

Eltaeb continued: ‘What really p***es me off was saying “Truth, Justice, and a Better World.” F*** that, it was Truth, Justice, and the American way.

“My grandpa almost died in World War II; we don’t have a right to destroy s*** that people died for to give us. It’s a bunch of f***ing nonsense. They call us bigots and racist and s***, I would ask them, find me in the f***ing mainstream, not on the fringes, one f***ing book, one f***Ing t-shirt, one movie that says leftism is bad and conservatism is good, find it for me, they f***ing won’t, they’re not letting people have a voice, they’re the f***ing bigots. Sorry, that’s been bottled up for five years.’

In a later video, Eltaeb told fans: ‘I’m sorry I didn’t say anything sooner, we’re going to stand up to these tyrants and we’re not going to let them intimidate us. There’s a hell of a lot more of us than there are of them.’

After Eltaeb’s rant, Van Sciver said: ‘Gabe just exploded on my livestream. He had a lot to say, a lot of feelings and a lot of thoughts that he wasn’t able to share because he was working for DC Comics.

‘And that’s the reality. You cannot come out and be a conservative and criticise the company that you work for in this way. You have to be completely supportive of the corporate agenda, whatever it is.

‘You have to keep your negative or critical opinions to yourself, and it’s so liberating to be able to not work for DC comics and be able to say exactly what you think. And I think that’s what Gabe is going through here.’

More: Superman

Eltaeb had most recently been working on Superman: Son of Kal-El, and was supposed to be the colourist for the upcoming issue where current Superman Jon Kent – the son of Clark Kent – comes out as bisexual.

The issue will see Jon begin a relationship with journalist Jay Nakamura, and it has caused some controversy, with many mistakenly believing that Clark Kent is the one who is being written as bisexual.

Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, accused DC Comics of ‘bandwagoning’, while Christopher Biggins claimed on Good Morning Britain that the comics were ‘pandering to the woke system’.

As for the motto change, DC’s chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee explained that the change would better reflect Superman’s storylines.

He said at a DC FanDome event: ‘To better reflect the storylines that we are telling across DC and to honour Superman’s incredible legacy over 80 years of building a better world, Superman’s motto is evolving.’
