Why probiotics could be secret to great skin – including this £4.99 moisturiser
Bacteria gets a bad rep, but not all bugs are nasty! In fact, a healthy microbiome (the official name for bacteria on the surface of our body) could be the secret to great skin.
We have thousands of types of bacteria on our face, and the more diverse they are, the better our skin is, as they defend against different aggressors and irritants, such as pollution.
Just like probiotics for the gut – which help feed the bacteria to treat and prevent issues like bloating, constipation and yeast infections – the topical equivalent helps to balance your skin from the outside in by helping good bacteria thrive. In turn, this reduces sensitivity, inflammation and just about any skin concern you could imagine. Yes, including premature ageing.

Since going through the menopause, my eyelashes have fallen out. What can I do to get them to grow back? Alice, Bolton
Your lashes will be in a growth cycle and may take up to three months to start growing. To give them the best chance, eat a healthy diet full of lean protein. Megi-Wellness Advanced Hair Growth, £30 for 60 capsules, is packed with biotin, folic acid and horsetail to strengthen hair follicles and stimulate growth – great if yours are struggling.
As they come through, use Mavala Eye Care Double Lash, £16.50, for fuller and stronger lashes. Apply before bed on both upper and lower lashes. Tracey McAlpine @fightingfifty
