The best Halloween movies for kids: From Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride to Hocus Pocus
There are plenty of films kids can enjoy this Halloween (Picture: Rex Features|Disney)
Halloween is fasting approaching and plenty of people are excited for an excuse to celebrate.
While some are set to go all out, others prefer to settle in for the night for a spooky movie.
However, for people with kids – or just people who aren’t that into horrors – it can be a little more difficult.
Never fear! We’ve got you covered with some of the best Halloween-themed films that are appropriate for kids but still absolute classics.
Coraline
The film is based on Neil Gaiman’s story (Picture: REX/Shutterstock)
Adapted from the book by Neil Gaiman, Coraline is a widely loved Halloween classic that follows a young girl who visits a world that mirrors her own.
She loves it until her Other Mother tries to keep her there – and she has to find her way back.
Rated PG, it’s appropriate for plenty of kids but, let’s face it, still absolutely terrifying enough for the season.
Coraline can be streamed on NOW Cinema.
Hocus Pocus
It’s a Halloween classic (Picture: AMC)
Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus is still well-loved.
It follows a youngster who moves to Salem before awakening a trio of witches that were executed in the 17th century – as you do.
It’s also PG rated, so plenty of kids will be able to enjoy it.
Hocus Pocus can be streamed on Disney+.
The Haunted Mansion
Eddie Murphy stars in the Disney film (Picture; Bruce McBroom.)
One of Eddie Murphy’s most bizarre movies, Disney’s The Haunted Mansion is definitely memorable.
It sees the realtor Jim Evers (Eddie) and his family get trapped in a haunted mansion, with chaos ensuing.
The 2003 flick (which is rated PG) may only have an audience score of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and an even lower critic score, but we reckon you haven’t experienced cinema until you’ve seen Eddie Murphy argue with a crystal ball.
The Haunted Mansion can be streamed on Disney+.
Corpse Bride
It’s a Tim Burton classic (Picture: Warner Bros Entertainment)
Tim Burton! Helena Bonham Carter! What’s not to love?
It’s the director’s first stop-motion animation and follows Victor (Johnny Depp) who is dragged into the land of the dead before he can marry Emily (Helena).
It’s rated PG and is a favourite for many Halloween lovers.
Corpse Bride can be streamed on Prime Video.
Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom is perfect for younger viewers (Picture: BBC/Available Light Production)
For younger children, the adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s book would be a great watch.
It’s got a U certificate and follows a kind witch who invites a host of animals onto her broom, and who then help her to defeat a fearsome dragon.
Room on the Broom can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
Hotel Transylvania
Hotel Transylvania’s got plenty of sequels to sink your teeth into (Picture: REX)
A must-watch for kids at Halloween, the animated movie follows Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) who operates a resort far away from the human world.
He goes into protective dad mode when a boy falls for his teenage daughter.
It’s a PG and can be streamed on Netflix – and if the little ones get bored, it’s got two sequels with the fourth instalment coming in January. Buckle in!
Monsters Inc.
One of Pixar’s best ever releases (we’re not budging on this), Monsters Inc follows Sully (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal) in their work to scare children.
However, they soon realise not all is as it seems with the company.
It’s a PG and we’re certain it’s going to stay a timeless classic.
Monsters Inc can be streamed on Disney+.
Frankenweenie
Because there’s never too much Tim Burton at Halloween (Picture: Disney)
More Tim Burton? Why not?!
Frankenweenie is a parody and homage to 1931’s Frankenstein, with the likes of Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder lending their voices to the film.
It follows young Victor who conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life.
Rated PG, it’s available to stream on Disney+.
Scooby Doo
Is there a more classic film for Halloween?
The love for the 2002 live action film is still strong, with the likes of Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher starring as those ‘meddling kids’.
Add in a spot of Rowan Atkinson, and you’re away.
Scooby Doo is rated PG and it’s available to rent on Prime Video.

Casper
Casper is surely a staple of all our childhoods, so we’ll be needing to pass that onto the next generation pronto.
The movie follows a kind young ghost who falls in love with a teenage girl (Christina Ricci) who moves into a mansion in Maine with her dad.
However, of course things don’t quite go to plan for the pair.
Rated PG, it’s available to rent on Prime Video.
