Eminem celebrates as classic 2002 hit Lose Yourself passes 1billion streams on Spotify
Eminem’s 2002 hit Lose Yourself has finally racked up over 1billion streams on Spotify and it’s one of the oldest tracks to do so, judging by the platform’s top 100 most streamed songs.
The list is mainly made up of tracks that debuted over the last decade, with the oldest entry to date (as of February 23) being Jason Mraz hit I’m Yours from 2008.
Having just hit 1billion, Lose Yourself is just a little shy of hitting the top 100 most-streamed, with its lowest entries Billie Eilish’s When The Party’s Over and Fifth Harmony’s work From Home sitting at 1.091billion.
Still, it’s a hugely impressive feat that Eminem – real name Marshall Mathers – seemed pretty stoked about, as he celebrated reaching the milestone on Twitter.
The rapper quoted the last line from the song, as he told fans: ‘You can do anything you set your mind to, man… #LoseYourself is over 1billion on @Spotify.’
Lose Yourself dropped nearly two decades ago and was produced and written by Eminem as part of the soundtrack for his movie 8 Mile.
There’s no denying that the track will go down as a classic and we dare you to find us anyone that’s unable to recite the tune lyric from lyric, sweaty palms and weak knees and all.
Following its release Lose Yourself went on to become Eminem’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart number one and it stayed on top for a huge 12 consecutive weeks.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, it also bagged an Oscar.
Yep, Lose Yourself was given the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003, so it’s no surprise that fans all over are still getting their fill today.
Eminem now joins a whole host of bands and artists who have seen their tracks hit the 1billion mark on Spotify, including Dua Lipa, John Legend, Post Malone, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.
Drake was the first ever artist to hit 1billion streams on Spotify with his track One Dance in 2016. His record was then topped by Ed Sheeran the following year in 2017 with his hit Shape Of You.
Shape Of You holds the top spot for the most-streamed song on Spotify, flying past its fellow contenders and sitting pretty with 2.72billion streams.
Post Malone and 21 Savage are next in line, as their track Rockstar has been streamed 2.12billion times.
Eminem, meanwhile, surprised fans with new music in December, as he dropped surprise album Music To Be Murdered By – Side B.
It’s a follow-up to Music To Be Murdered By that he released in January last year, with Eminem’s new record featuring collaborations with Ty Dolla $ign, Dr Dre and Skylar Grey, as well as an apology to Rihanna.
His track Zeus sees Eminem say sorry to Rihanna, after a leaked song from 2009 saw Eminem rapping about ‘siding with Chris Brown’.
He raps in his new track: ‘And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna/For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri/It wasn’t meant to cause you grief/Regardless, it was wrong of me.’
Eminem’s latest record is his 12th studio album and the fourth album he’s dropped in the last four years.
