Nicola Coughlan has confirmed her return to the set of Derry Girls, as filming steps up on the third and final series.

The actress, known for playing Clare Devlin on the hit Channel 4 comedy, shared a behind-the-scenes picture as she prepares to say goodbye to the show.

Nicola shared a snap of herself in character, wearing a blue scrunchy as well as a denim jacket and multicoloured jumper as she prepared to play Clare for the first time since 2019.

‘Guess who’s back in the house?,’ she wrote on Twitter, adding the hashtag: ‘#ReturnOfTheWeeLesbian.’

It comes after the stars of the programme have been sharing photos from the set as they prepare to say farewell to the programme.

Creator Lisa McGee previously disappointed fans around the world as she confirmed that series three would be the final one.

Jamie Lee O’Donnell, who plays Michelle, shared a photograph of herself, Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Louisa Harland hanging out in Erin’s house, looking like they were on their way to a rave (now that’s an episode we’d love to see!).

Fans have been wondering where Nicola has been over recent weeks, with her absent from the set due to other commitments.

Nicola has been busy filming Bridgerton and appearing as a guest judge in RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and Derry Girls will be excited to see her back as Clare.

Derry Girls, which last aired back in 2019, follows a group of Northern Irish teens growing up during The Troubles.

Announcing the news that the series would be coming to an end after series three, Lisa said in a statement: ‘It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series,’ said Lisa in a statement.

‘Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved. I’d like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for getting behind us.

‘Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.’

Meanwhile, creator Lisa recently responded to Derry Girls being described as ‘distinctively British’ by former Media Minister John Whittingdale.

Lisa, who is Northern Irish and hails from Derry herself, said she ‘can’t be dealing’ with the show being called ‘distinctively British’.

Derry Girls series one and two is available to watch on All4.
