Kate Garraway has revealed she has packed up the office Derek Draper used to work from, after putting it off for months because it was ‘emotional’ to say goodbye to the space.

Derek had worked as a psychotherapist before he was hospitalised with Covid-19 at the start of the pandemic, spending the best part of a year in an induced coma or with minimal consciousness due to the effects of the virus on his body.

The former lobbyist had been one of the worst-affected cases to have survived coronavirus but has been left with damage to his organs and needing round-the-clock care.

Kate previously revealed she had kept up the rent on his office space as it was too emotional to pack it up, even though he was unable to return, but revealed this week that ‘fate’ had intervened, forcing her to vacate the premises.

Alongside a photo of her with a removal man, Kate wrote: ‘So… one of things have been tackling is packing up Derek’s therapy rooms & office.

‘Had been dragging my feet because I knew it would be so emotional & because didn’t want to seem to be giving up hope of him returning to the work he loves one day.

‘Then the building was put up for sale and we had to clear out – fate! Next problem was the huge task of packing up all his files, his cuttings, books and furniture he’s treasured for decades.’

The Good Morning Britain host revealed that she had called in movers to help and was hoping that once day they would be able to move Derek back into a new office once he is well enough to work.

Kate concluded: ‘Step forward the team from @davisandmac – this is not an ad just a hearty recommendation of a great team of lads who worked damn hard and were so sensitive to the situation.

‘Thanks a million chaps – will be definitely calling you when Derek is setting up his new venture!’

Derek had been allowed out of hospital a year after being admitted to hospital and is being cared for at home.

Kate revealed that their plans for Christmas will look quite different this year, as she told Woman’s Own: ‘This year, we have got him home – and fingers crossed we can keep him home.

‘Of course, he’s not going to be putting on his Santa costume, going out with [daughter] Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with [son] Billy.

‘None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it’s adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he’s here at all, which we didn’t have at all last year and feared would never happen.’
